SES #3 misfire and now a bad knock

Hey folks....

The 2002 GLE was running great until Tuesday.....101K on it. On the way to work it started to miss and the SES did the flashy flashy thing...took it home and let it sit.....today I took it to the Zone and they read the code as a Cylinder #3 misfire.....bought a set of plugs and a coil pack and did the whole swaperoo. Now the car is knocking badly at idle.

I ran the VIN through the Nissan dealership and the cam / crank sensor recall was done by the previous owner. The oil level was a bit low when I checked it on Wednesday morning so I went ahead and did an oil and filter change.

I've done alot of reading and it looks like the IVT sensors could be the culprit but I'm looking for more experienced input.

WTF is wrong with my car????? Anyone?

TIA....

Jeff

well if im thinking correctly you have a 3.5l in youre car? If so you would have had to remove the plentum from the engine in order to get to the rear spark plugs. When the plentum is removed it is very easy to get a little careless and allow for a nut/bolt or other foregn object down the intake. It would then either sit on the top of the valve and it would make a knocking noise or it would get down into the combustion chamber and knock as well, it sounds to me like this is what happend judging by what you did. if you have an earlier version of the 2002 maxima it had a 3.0 and I cant remember if the plentum had to be removed on that engine or not its been a while since i worked on that engine, however its still a possibility that you could have dropped a not/bolt down the spark plug hole.

Thanks for the input dude....but I'm very sure that there's not a FOD issue. I really think it's electrical....

I'm thinking it's timing chain tensioner slap......it sounds pretty ugly at idle but is completely gone at 3k rpm (not under load...haven't driven it yet)

I drive 150 miles a day toand from work and.....stupid me.....I let the oil level go too long without checking. It was low......and has now been changed. I've run nothing but synthetic oil in the car since I got it 2 years ago.

I just changed all 6 plugs (NGK copper, gapped to .044) and also just swapped out both cam position sensors....but she's still missing and knocking. After doing some more reading, I popped off both IVT solenoids, took them apart, hosed them out with cleaner and put them back on. Still no dice.

My gut feeling is that the whole issue is related to the oil level dropping too low......maybe I should flush and fill a few times???? Run some ATF or seafoam through it?

Thoughts?

OK.....so the resident dumba$$ (that would be me) put the thing back together last night half in the dark and half in the bag......and got the coil harnesses for 1 and 3 swapped.....oops.

The car is still missing but the knock is gone. Go figure. The sad part is that I decided the coil I swapped out was good...and took the new one back already. Probably need to go to the store and get that SOB back.
