How much are mods worth when you sell?

Yes, I know, trick question.
But thought you guys would like this.

I'm still selling BMW's at a BMW dealership.
Last week a guy trades in a 2010 Mustang GT Convertible, manual trans, 14,000 miles. They book it out, make the deal, take it in, then put it on the front line with a Retail Price of $31,995. So what is the big deal?

The guy who traded it in had $40,000 worth of mods professionally installed. He was into the car for about $80k.

talked to the technician who did the work on the car. Yeah, the guy spent $40,000 on mods.

$10,000 for just the brakes
$8k for the radar detector
Eibach Pro II+ suspension

$8k for the stereo system

He had the gears in the procharger specially cut (helical instead of square) to avoid noise, and custom built a muffler for the blow-off to make a true sleeper.

He de-tuned the car to 509hp for reliability, says there is at least another 100+ hp available if you want it, but the guy wanted it as a daily driver and opted for the 509. The technician is bringing me the tuner, says it should go with the car.

Nice way to spend money if you have money to to burn. Maybe Maxima mods bring more $$ ?

I mean it looks nice...but when you say sell with mods you mean as parts then they would be worth more money to the person buying them for obvious reasons. If your saying a car like this with mods on it to be sold with the car then to the dealer they can simply say its worth less because you changed things(even if you made it better) you reduced its value PERIOD. HOWEVER, the dealer is well aware that they can make a pretty penny with a car like this because to the buyer its worth it but the dealer will always win unless you VERY good at driving hard bargains. just my 2 cents

The dealership booked it as a GT convertible when it came in. None of the mods added to bluebook value.

I saw the receipt for the brake work, it was right at $10k. Just the rears retail for $1600, plus all the other stuff he did with it plus the (extravagent) labor. The guy had a custom car built for him, he spent all the money. But you're right, you could probably have done it all yourself for $20,000 plus the labor.

nice car for 30k.

If you demodded it before selling and kept all the stock parts you could've probably recovered 30-50% of what the parts cost new... I guess the guy wasn't too concerned about money.

I've never heard of a radar detector for $8000. What does it do? Does Come with ambassadorial diplomatic immunity?

It's probably one of those ones with the display built into the dash, sensors mounted in the grill, etc.

It reads like the owner had supercar money burning a hole in his pocket, spent it modifying a Mustang, then a year later realized he was still driving a Ford.

Some people...

Really? Even though it doesn't have that reliable old V6 Automatic?

Maybe you could do an engine swap?

No way I'd use it as a daily driver. Funtime car only and within 6 months I will sell it at a car show and make $5k on it.

No, no... I was suggesting you swap your V6 into the GT.

Oh, never mind.

Buy, it. Have some fun.

$8k for a radar detector does not exist. Maybe they meant $1,800. Unless they had $8k worth of radar detectors and laser jammers.

The procharger is nice. That car is worth about $20-25k at the most.

Good condition GT of that year is about $20k. Supercharger kit costs about $8k. The 2011 drove the price down on all these cars because the 2011's 5.0 DOHC offered the same horsepower as a blown 4.6.

The wholesale KBB on a stock 2010 GT vert with no adds at all is $24,400. Good luck buying anything close to that, after being fully reconditioned at a dealership. Nice used cars are at a premium right now, they are going through auctions above wholesale. If you can buy a nice 2010 for $20k, buy as many as you can get. You will make money on every one.

Passport 9500ci is the best radar/laser system you can get on the market right now, and they sell for around $1,600 plus install.

That's what I'm saying, $8K for radar lol. My questions should've been, which BMW did he buy?

Mods=Money down the drain. Over 15G is in my car, i will not get it back no matter what i try.

The only cars that could possibly make it back would be Supras, and maybe something like a GTR in Canada. Otherwise maybe a 1/3 if your lucky but most of the time 1/4 of the money you put in you will get back.

would be a nice car to test drive(smart move to keep the keys locked up). Labor must have been more than 1/2 of that price.

And a damn fine machine it is.

Still got the red V6 as well.
