Might swap in my aftermarket headunit....

My Bose head unit is giving me a cd err. It was working fine and when I got in the car the other day it just said "err" and spit it back out, and it has not played a cd since Monday.

If I put in an aftermarket unit, how will that work for me with this system being a bose system? Will it swap right in and give me the same sound quality or does this head unit have an amp built into it?

I found a site where a guy gives a breakdown on how to fix the cd err issue by resoldering the resistor on the board, but the model he has is different from my model.

This is what my stereo looks like.

Genius is right. All u will need is the correct harness.

BUT, from what i have heard, BOSE works best with BOSE. AF HU wont sound good with BOSE speakers. U can try tho and see how it sounds.

Make sure your AF HU has pre-amp outs.

I don't think you will get the same sound quality, and trying to get it you might just end up blowing the speakers

You'll get better sound with an aftermarket headunit.

Although if you use the Bose deck with aftermarket speakers, sound quality will either be the same, potentially sound worse, or the speakers will blow

I recently replaced my entire Bose sound system, I would reccommend just replacing the entire system because Bose isn't very good.

I put in a Kenwood KDC-248U and Kicker DS65.2 Component System, but I'm not running it from an amp but it sounds alot clearer than my Bose, I would say it has a tiny bit less bass, but the Bose have built on amp's into the speakers so it's understandable.

AGREED, should look into speakers also, Bose on a maxima is okay but I know my Fosgates with a Pioneer Deck was 4 to 5 times better....GL....

People who say BOSE is trash are just spoiled I had a friend of mine put in an aftermarket XPLOD deck, with no extra harness, and it sounds great. I would have kept the BOSE but the damn volume **** stopped working.

I had a kenwood HU with stock speakers. They sounded 10x better over stock HU. My HU came with 2 cheapo speakers, installed them later on...disabled the BOSE amps. Perfect setup for me.

Crutchfield.com throws in the harness for free.

If you really really want to keep the Bose sound at high quality with an aftermarket head unit, you can do this;

Get the Audiolink PD4 from ebay here;
http://www.ebay.com/itm/AudioLink-Mo...21442397318184

Then get the bose harness from crutchfield here;
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1207075...s.html?tp=2977

This system will interface perfectly any standard HU with front and rear pre-amp outputs with volume (variable pre-out) to the standard bose amps and speakers in your Maxima.

You would wire the aftermarket HU to the input connector (those green things on each end of the PD4) then wire the output connector of the PD4 to the Nissan harness. Once you've created those 2 harnesses, everything is plug and play.

I have the PD4 with a Clarion CX609 and love it. My Bose still sounds great and I now have ipod connectivity as well as other capabilities like bluetooth etc from the CX609.

What I'm going to do is get a new double DIN Pioneer AVH-P3300BT HU. Has Bluetooth for my phone, touch screen, USB and I-pod inputs, AND plays DVD's. That should be everything I need.

I plan on keeping the good original Bose speakers with integral amps. Will do as Crutchfield suggests and get the $40 Nissan Factory Integration Adapter:

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_142C4NN...r.html?tp=3486

Also, I'll get the Pioneer emergency brake by-pass adapter ($15.00) that allows use of the DVD play mode while driving (not so I can watch it while I'm driving but for my passengers, you understand

http://www.ebay.com/itm/PIONEER-VIDE...item1c1dccb1da

I think that's all I need. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I have a Kenwood KVT flip out in my Z28 and with that you do not need any kind of adapter. All you do is take the parking disabler wire and ground it and it will play dvd's while you're driving.

The Pioneer may be different but I have no experience with them.

My Camaro has a pretty nice audio setup but I do not plan on changing anything in the Maxima as I have always loved the way it sounds. It's perfect for me and it really does sound great.

I would like to stick with the factory bose unit if I can figure out a way to repair this cd err problem. I've read of people sending it in to be repaired only to have it last 6 months or so. I want a solid fix.

Dude, the PD4 is for you. I'm a finicky audiophile and also wanted the Bose sound intact. When I installed my PD4, I adjusted my gain settings while comparing to my buddie's stock 99 I30 Bose system. My setup sounds virtually identical to OEM except that now I have an aftermarket HU with all the extra features. If you're in the NY area I'd be happy to show you my setup.

I read some mfrs DVD units will work fine by simply cutting and taping over the green e-brake ground wire, but others don't and could damage the new HU. For $15 I am not taking a chance damaging a new $350 HU....will get the brake by-pass module.

Z28 has 1.5 din so a double din is not possible without modifying the dash plastic.

Guys worried about the parking brake wire... That wire is a 12v negative. When the brake is engaged, it grounds the wire out, allowing the dvd to play. By grounding the wire to the stereo ground on the back of the hu you are accomplishing the same thing.

I would guess that a "bypass" is nothing more than an overpriced ground switch.

Just ground it and it has the same effect as the parking wire being hooked up to the brake and the brake engaged.

No need to worry.

And oddly, on my way home from dinner tonight, I put a cd in just to see if it would work and it did, the entire way home. I was able to shuffle around, fast forward, rewind, etc... I'm guessing it will go out again tomorrow or something.

Any fixes for an intermittent problem like that?

No, people who say BOSE suck are people who jam their music @ loud volumes.

Bose is par up with 90% of the speakers maxima.org'rs can afford/would buy at reasonable volumes, but when you crank it up it's just sounds like poo (this isn't a maxima thing, it's a bose thing).

My 4th gen didn't come with any speakers, but my 5th gen did w/ a pioneer HU, distorted the **** outta songs with the volume cranked up. So does my friend's 4th gen w/ an aftermarket HU and stock speakers, sounds as good as my Clarion 6.5's down low but when he cranks it up it distorts the music pretty badly.....

BTW I'm using a Kenwood dpx-503 with Clarion 6-3/4's in the front and Infiniti Kappa's in the rear w/ the stock bose amps, only problem I have are the stock tweeters crackling @ high volumes, which I plan on getting a decent set of components to replace the fronts with, but I will still use the stock bose amps, until they fail... then I will replace em w/ more bose amps

PD4 all the way ,but if you want to take it to another level a little know trick is to just replace you tweeters with a good set of aftermarket ones and your bose will be pretty nice
