2 months old, windshield crack

I've been lurking on this forum for awhile and I knew I'd sign up one day, didn't think it'd be for something like this though.

I got my 2011 Premium on 1/3/12, with no issues so far. Today that changed.. Parked the car, went shopping, and as I was walking towards my car, I noticed a footlong crack in the windshield, just to the left of the rear view mirror. It starts up at the top edge of the windshield. NOTHING HAPPENED!! I have no clue where this came from.

Im going to call me dealer tomorrow and see if they're any help at all.

Anyone else been there, done it??

I was shocked to find mine today, as I'm sure you were to watch(!?!) yours crack.
It didn't affect your premium? I'll have to call State Farm as well then..

Good thing the entire roof is made of the same stuff lol

I actually have a crack in my 2009, but it's a very small one, maybe a couple millimeters, and hasn't expanded since 2010.

This happened to my '09 when I had it as well. Drove it one evening home, it rained that night, and when I went to get in the car in the morning, it had a crack that started at the bottom right side and went up and across to the middle of the windshield. No clue what it came from and it had no markings showing where it may have picked up a rock or something. Actually had 2 windshields replaced on that car.

The 2nd one was like you Pearl...driving across the VA/NC border and watched a truck kick up a concrete chip it seemed like and come flying at me. It was large enough to make me duck with my head like it was going to take me out, haha...

actually...I think Safelite was able to just patch that chip and not have to replace the windshield for me. I think it was like $70 out of pocket since I have the $100 deduct from State Farm.

Happened to my '09. I was driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway, and had just climbed from an elevation of around 2000 feet where the sunny temp was 90 degrees to the top of Humpback Mountain (over 4000 feet elevation), where it was cloudy, misty and around 75 degrees.

Suddenly there was a loud rifle shot that startled us. My wife immediately ducked to the floor, and I floored the accellerator to get away before the next shot. When we slowed down a mile or so later, we both saw a crack running from the bottom middle of the windshield upward about 15 inches. But no bullet hole. Nothing had struck the windshield. The crack had begun at the bottom edge behind the wiper.

By the time we got home to Georgia a week later, the crack had reached around 18 inches up the windshield, then curved to the side and had worked itself halfway back down the windshield. Strange.

The new windshield was around $500 installed at my home. I understand lower prices are available is some locations. State Farm paid the portion above my deductable. The glue used to attach the windshield has a putrid smell, so we moved the car underneath a huge maple tree in our yard before the new windshield was put in, so our garage wouldn't smell like rotten eggs. We were told to not move the car for four hours while the glue set.

No trouble in the 2 1/2 years since.

The glass that they use on these windshields is a cheaper version than what they used on the 5th Gen, the glass on my 03 SE is as tough as nails. A BFR (Big F*ckN Rock) hits the windshield on the 03 and just a little circle without a split will occur but a LFR (Little F*ckN Rock) hits my 09 windshield and instantly it starts a Soul Train line all the way across the entire windshield.

Nissan surely cut corners on this windshield!!

I recall some mentions in the past about stress cracks. If there's no obvious cause, the dealership may replace it for you gratis.

Hey guys. Just come to post something else and figured ill give you the update for whoever this happens to next!

It turned out to be a miniscule rock chip that cracked a couple weeks after the impact. There's an easy way you can tell if it's stress or rock chip: Take a ballpoint pen to the crack. If the tip gets caught up, thats your damage. If it make the the pass cleanly, likely stress.

I got dealer price through a referral to a glass shop here in Seattle where they paid $100 of my deductible, and I used a non-incident claim with State Farm to end up only having to pay $150 out of pocket. Not too bad.

Good info, klopp91. I have never heard of the ball point pen impact detection system, but I will remember it. I like that you got yours fixed for less than the 'going rate.'

Welcome to the club. I am on my third windshield in two years.... The last one cracked as i hit 70 getting on the highway and a rock jumped up from the car in front and put an immediate 6 inch crack across the passenger side. By the time i got home, it was 12 inches across the entire right side.
