ummmm.. that's timmeh!

you have about 6 screws to undo. you have to release the airbag connector from the top of the glovebox. By that I mean squeeze two tabs that hold the connector to the glovebox, NOT disconnect the wires. You can undo the spring loaded wire and snap in clips that take off the glovebox, or just be sure to remove everything in it. the heavier it is, the harder it is to mess with.

You can also loosen the rubber gasket around the door jam by pulling it forward a bit so the assembly comes out freely. The glovebox assembly pulls forward (thats the whole bottom half of the dash).

While the assembly is loose in your hand, disconnect the glove box light. Set aside in a safe place (so it doesnt get scratched). the filter, or spot for it, will be facing directly at you on the airbox. Undo the clip, then the cover slides up, then off. You might have to give it alittle push forward before it will slide up freely. There you have it..

The filters have good instuctions. I know that all sounds crazy, but it's a 15 min job at most.

These instructions are also on the Courtesy Nissan website... Try and do it yourself if you can -- I just had mine changed for the first time by the dealer. It cost me $31.75 to install a $45 filter Next time I will be doing myself.

its easy.. but

not for everyone.. there is a airbag connector involved. how or why you would disconnect it is beyond me.. also, the whole assembly is alittle unwieldy to get back in place... not hard, just awkward. So, its not for everyone.. but one of the more simple DIY things you can do.

Yeah I would be one of them idiots, I unhooked it not knowing what the hell that thing does. When I turned the car on the next time I got a check engine light. Just glad that bastard never went off.

PS, I unhooked it to get off the whole glove box to install that neon light underneath.

Good question...

My AE is going on a year old this month with 16K miles on it. Not sure if I am going to bother yet or not. It would be a different matter if it were easier to get to, but where it is combined with the cost makes me put off doing it.

I remember reading Nissans spec as 15k miles or 1 year. I'm going to install mine when the spring hits. No need for pollen filter when it's 30 degrees out.

I changed mine last month, with about 19k miles and just over a year of ownership. On the way back from the dealer, I thought that the air coming in through the vent smelt much nicer than it was before I changed the filter. I pretty much plan to keep on changing it about once a year or about every 15-20k miles. A lot of it might have to due with the climate in which you live in too. If you're a big allergies person, it might be a good idea to change it regularily.

I just removed and cleaned this filter at 10,000 miles. It was pretty dirty and there was quite a bit of debris (small leaves, dead bugs, etc) stuck to it. It's just a pleated paper filter that looks like it might have some charcoal sprayed on it. The owner's manual says this thing can be washed in soapy water. I'm not sure it will hold up to being immersed in water. When I buy a new one I'll try washing the old one and see how it holds up.

Service interval per manual is 15,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first.

It certainly doesn't look like it's worth what Nissan is charging for it. In my opinion it doesn't do a very good job of keeping pollen out of the cabin. I see a lot of dust building up on the center instrument cluster directly beneath the two center vents.

As mentioned in previous posts, the yellow wire behind the glove box goes to the passenger side airbag. This wire should not be disconected unless the battery is disconnected FIRST!

i looked at the layout and design of the wire harness for the airbag, saw no reason why nissan placed that harness on the glove box, to recreate that location and vibration free contact with the connector, when i installed my filter for the first time on my 2K max in March, i left the connector off the glove box and wrap it in sponge and tie wrap it to the harness that is layout right above the previous location of the connector. so in the future, i dont have to worry about that connector when taking out the glove box for the filter or any work.

neil

this in cabin micronfilter is just another gimmick to get you into the dealership. I asked if it could be removed permanently (so that I wouldn't have to fuss with it in the future) and I was told that the system is designed to operate with the filter in place. Come on, I've been breathing "unfiltered" air for the last 30 years of driving...I don't think this micronfilter is going to save me now.

You are correct. The idiot that told you that it is designed to operate with it is just plain stupid. Its just a cover, and if its in use then they put filters in. Period. Stupid Nissan. At least I did not "pay" for it.

actually...

there is some evidence that it was *not* designed with the filter there. My blower fans (max and pf) start ticking within 6 months of being replaced when I use the filters.

Suggesting that the fan motor was not big enough to handle the "filtered" (read lower cfm airflow) air?

yeah i had mine done after about 20,000 miles on my x maxima . i had the dealer do it, because i was affraid of messing around the airbag area. courtesyparts have them for reasonable price compare to the dealer. i will do mine by the end of this year on my 2001 max
