Bad CV?
Bad CV?
Last night on my way home from work, I felt a vibration in the steering wheel when I counter steered against some high winds.
After turning the music down I could also hear it, coming from the passenger(right) side, which seemed to match wheel speed. It's non existent unless I'm mildly accelerating and/or slightly turning to the right, and won't start doing it until I have been doing 80-90km/hr, for about 5-10 mins.
I had a look today and both cv boots are in good shape and show no signs of leakage. The wheel seems solid, so I am really thinking its a bad CV, lemme know what you guys think.

That axle was actually replaced about 8 months ago, so it is gonna be a free part. That is def what I'm gonna try first.
The reason I think it went is, the actual axle nut backed off because the codar pin was too far away on this replacement axle(described in a other thread). This allowed the outside splined axle shaft to move in and out of the hub for quite sometime, which I now believe may have caused on of the CV's to go. I only discovered this a couple weeks ago, tightened the nut and added washers to come up to the codar pin to prevent it from backIng off again.
I'm gonna throw the new axle in ASAP. It it wil prob have to wait til the weekend. I really have my doubts, but does anyone else think this could be a wheel bearing?

Nothing more than what was already stated. If your CV boots are in good condition, then it's fairly unlikely it's your axle/CV joint.
Since the axle nut did back off, I'm more inclined to believe it's your wheel bearing as mentioned. A loose nut is MORE likely to kill your bearing than your CV joint.

If the axle nut was loose, then it's most likely (if not 100%) the wheel bearing. That was my EXACT issue. It didn't make any noise until the bearing was completely trashed, then it made popping noises like a CV when turning.
The heat from driving must be causing it to become audible somehow.

Ok, thanks guys, I'm gonna put the axle in tomorrow just because I can for free and some piece of mind. If it's still there I'll be ordering a wheel bearing and putting it in this weekend.
I'll report back with results

So for a while this noise had completely gone away, and I have been busy so I just put it on the back burner. Last night on the way home, it went from quiet to rediculously bad and I need to get to work on Monday. I grabbed an aftermarket bearing from my local parts place, and am going to a buddies with a press to change the bearing today.
I'm hoping that the hub and knuckle are ok, as I read all of knights thread about his replacement, but I couldn't get these parts on short notice so hopefully the bearing is all I need.
For anyone who has done just the bearing, any tips or tricks that might make this less painful?
