Turbo charger-like sound

I notice when I'm driving that I hear a faint whining noise coming from under the hood. Especially when I gas it a little bit. I think it's the water pump but I'm not sure.

Any help as to what it is and if it isn't anything good would be appreciated.

Thanks

Do your lights dim when at idle, and get brighter when you give it some gas?
If so, it could be your alternator. Mine had that "supercharger" noise when the alternator was going.

Oops, I read supercharger, not turbocharger...
Supercharger as I understand is a whiny sound where as turbochargers have a whistle-ly sound, so uh, I dunno anymore.

I can't post a video because the noise it too faint. All I can tell is that it is coming from the engine and I can't hear it at idle. And yes it does change with RPM

I've noticed that when I turn an accessory on (i.e lights, sound system and even turning signals) that the fan (A/C or heat) seems to die down and then pick back up. I don't know if this is normal or not but I figured it was. I was hoping my alternator isn't going.

one thing you can do is take the belt off and spin each pully by hand to feel if its turning smoothly and that might give you a clue

I had a similar noise, by description, when my idler pulley was going out. It was not very loud at all, and I couldn't narrow it down. Until the bearing gave out and I lost the pulley and my belt on 294

The a/c compressor is easy to check. Just turn on the defroster. If the noise changes it's the a/c.
For the p/s just turn the wheel while parked.
For the idler or alt you can remove the belt.
If you still have a noise it could be the timming chains on worn guides.
