grinding noise upon startup

My car was sitting for 10 days and upon startup there was this really bad grinding noise for only a few seconds. Happened on the second startup and it is fine now. It has happened before. Anyone have this problem?

Not to bring this up from the dead, but did this ever get solved... Ive been searching this morning because my car has the following symptoms,

1 - hard starts, car "burps" during start. cranks and cranks with coming within an inch of turning over

2 - sometimes when I turn the key it doesnt make any engine cranking noise just a HORRIBLE GRINDING!!!

any help would be much apreciated

Does it do the grinding after you try multiple start-ups? The flywheel could still be turning as the starter engages.

sometimes, but sometimes its on its first try. I'll try this, really I just want her to start up first turn of the key, no grinds, you know, like a normal car. All the threads about the grind say its the starter, but I just replaced it, TWICE!!!

Would that really make such a horrid noise? and how do I troubleshoot that/ figure out if that is the source?

When it makes the grinding sound, the engine makes no sound of turning its either "turn/burp" or "grind"

EDIT:
Yes its a throw back, but I wanted it clear that I SEARCHED, found nothing worth while, so still need help

UPDATE

This morning, car's cold put the key in the ignition turned it to ON and let it sit for a minute.

Turned key to start car and got the grind right out. this leads me to the conclusion its NOT the FLYWHEEL still spinning, as the car had been off all night!!!!

any other ideas would be greatly appreciated

Im a 95 SE...

if it was the TC, wouldn't I still hear the engine try to turn, when the grinding happens, its all I hear, no engine, just the grind.

my other maxima (a '95) needs valve adjustment and when i turn it on it makes a grinding noise comming from the valves but goes away after about 5 seconds. kinda sounds like when an oil change is done and all the oil is down in the pan and when its turned on, u hear the valves grinding agains the wall, when it goes away i can still hear it but very very mildly
