Hi, I have a 97 Maxima GXE Auto with no mods, I just have this problem and its getting on my nerves. My car starts fine, but has to warm up for a good 5 minutes before I can get it to move. If I shift into D earlier it will stall. Also it will stall randomly when the engine is cold, generally the problem goes away when the engine is warm, but occurs again during parallel parking.
Also I have a CEL which throws Cam Shaft Pos Sensor codes and I had it replaced twice already with non-OEM (really don't care enough to buy stock). Last year I had a O2 sensor go and it was replaced and that hasn't coded since.

Any help figuring this out would be great, but I do have limited abilities to actually do much myself. Mechanics can't figure anything out and blame a wiring harness.

How many miles?
What condition is the fluid in?
Has the transmission ever been serviced?

Start with a spill and fill. Sounds like the TCC isn't disengaging until the fluid gets warm and thins out.

 

I have 165K on it, the fluid is in great shape. I am the 2nd owner and the gay who owed it before me (close family friend) did all the maintenance on it as suggested.

If it is the the TCC, what would I have to do and actually confirm this?

 

Also, this sounds kinda stupid, but my mechanic refuses to change the fluid. The theory goes that if he touches it, it wont work at all afterwards. (Its a fun Russian things) So that is not really an option. Also it was changed about 2 years ago (15K) ago, the previous owner had records.

 

No he has a good theory. Some think if you change the tranny fluid to much or even at all in an older tranny it will get worse and I tend to go with that theory as well. Your problem is not your tranny most likely it is your mass air flow sensor. A tranny issue would never stall a car, it would just shift like crap or not at all

 

May not help but its probably the cheapest and easiest fix...when was the last time the IACV was cleaned out?

 

i agree now that i have the maintenece records its probably not your trans.

however, if your TCC does not disengage your car will stall every time you put it in gear. but this is not your issue.

 

1. Check engine idle RPM if within spec.
2. TCC solenoid valve
3. Control valve body
