i need proof of y pipe gains

ok so heres the deal. i just bought an intake from a local guy here and actually got a pretty good deal on it, so i asked him if he could get y pipes for my car at good prices. he looked at me kind of funny and asked me why i would want to do that, so i told him about the gains it was supposed to make. well... he basically said that there was no possible way, and the only at the wheels gains that he thought it would likely produce would be 1 hp. i started to argue with him, but he knew his stuff so i didn't pursue it that far cuz i'm not real shure what about the y pipe causes those gains. does anyone have any information about how it is so effective and anything like before and after dynos or something like that so that i could prove to him that it really is that significant.

thanx

The Y-pipe gains have been proven. Some here have dynoed before & after Y install - hopefully someone will post dyno sheets for you. They're already here on the .org somewhere if you want to do some digging. Remember, search is your friend.

Warpspeed performance has some dyno #'s at their site:
http://www.warpspeedperformance.com

-And I agree with the suspicion that this self-proclaimed know-it-all you were dealing with doesn't know his a$$ from his elbow (at least when it comes to Y-pipes for the Maxima).

doesn't know his a$$ from his elbow

yeah, i think a lot of it has to do with the fact that he doesn't sell y pipes for the maxima and it would be just as cheap for me to order it as it would be for him to. and he could sell me an cattback that would produce good numbers (hmmmmm....) i think he does know his stuff (like about hondas) but if he doesn't know about something than he just makes it up anyway. and like one thing i remember him telling me was that i shouldn't mess with the y pipe or the cat because it would mess my car up and make the check engine light come on. i think he just wants me to buy more stuff from him, like that intake which is pretty good but i doubt it makes 10-15 hp. like he said.

yeah he's a moron. Intake is good for 4-8 hp, y pipe is good for 12-16 hp.

Don't waste your $ on a catback. The gains are minimal. Unless you've got the $ to blow on an entire exhaust (Y pipe & catback), hold off on that. The Y-pipe should definitely be your first exhaust mod. When combined with the intake mod, you'll notice a substantial improvement.

Keep in mind, people do the catback upgrades primarily for looks and sound, not horsepower. You might pick up a couple hp, but hp is definitely not the reason most people justify the cost.

10-15hp gains from an intake!!??? sure, this is possible, but a $5 nismo sticker gives you 20hp...a much cheaper alternative to getting more power!

It sounds to me that this guy hasnt worked with Maximas before. Its been shown time and time again, that mods that work for most cars, IE headers that give nice boosts in HP, or ECU reprograming dont do as much for our cars because they were done right the first time. Sounds like hes blowin smoke.....

y-pipe gains

Very interesting thread. Look at this PIC posted several days ago on the 3rd Gen forum. http://www.rpi.edu/~kwokc/pic/y-pipe04.jpg
There is a very good reason why y-pipes work. This PIC is a 3rd gen pipe OE and WSP y-pipe. The only big difference between 3rd and 4th is the Precats on the 4th. Look at how the rear down pipe enters against the flow of the exhaust. It's the same on the 4th gen as well. All aftermarket y-pipe are similar in the aspect they turn the flow of the rear down pipe around.
The guy obviously didn't know the Maxima.I hope this helps some.

Here is my fact get a Y PIPE, you will gain HP, that is the one mod that gives you the most HP, that was the best $400 I ever spent and it was worth it.

If only we could get NAV as an option too, paired up with the Nismo sticker, that would be the equivalent of a Stillen S/C

Every employee at every car-part store thinks they know everything under the sun about every car. He's just fulla **** .. I got a fair amount from mine, I dunno how much exactly because I never dynoed but it's a hell of a lot more than 1hp.
