How to route wire for backup camera

I am picking up a pre-owned 2010 Maxima SV on Thursday which does not have the OEM backup camera installed. I've gotten so used to having one on my current vehicle that I am considered adding an aftermarket camera that will work with the colour LCD display in the Maxima.

After doing some research, I figure I will pick up;

The PA VCI-NIS2 and install it behind the head unit

This backup camera which I expect replaces and fits into the existing license plate light which should make for a clean look.

The only obstacle in my way now is how to route the video cable from the camera to the head unit. After looking all over the web I haven't found anything specific to the Maxima.

Has anyone done this, or can anyone provide any help or suggestions?

This may be the type of thing you figure out as you go.

The website also has a wireless transmitter option, which would make for an easier install, however I question the reliability/quality of it and would prefer wired.

Thanks!

Hhmm I don't think any1 has done this yet here of they have it's been aftermarket screen and all that. Be very cool if you were able to get this working. I you don't mind me asking what did you drive before the Max?

You have the color monitor yes?

I work for a Cadillac Dealership and I've taken older CTS's (09,10) that didn't have the option of a backup camera and ordered the factory trunk molding from a 2011 with the camera in it and programmed the factory nav radio to activate the rear view camera on the factory screen. I'm sure the Max isn't quite as hard as the CTS but I'm curious as to if there is a way to just trigger the reverse wire to the factory color screen and wire the video signal from either an aftermarket camera or the factory camera.

Hmmmmm. wish I had a max to play with.

RE - my other vehicle is a Murano. Backup camera is very handy. Maybe not need on the Max, but i'm considering it all the same.

Yes I have the color screen, but no Nav.

According to the VCI-NIS2
  • Automatically switches to the backup camera input when the vehicle is shifted into reverse. Trigger wires included for accessing a secondary video input
It all seems easy enough, but I am not too interested in removing many interior pieces to run the cable from back to front.

I know what piece ur talking about. Just used the GM version on a Hummer on Friday. You will still have to remove panels to take the radio apart, pull the kick, door sill (front, rear) panels, remove the rear seat bottom, and trunk lid liner to install the camera. haha So better get interested in pulling panels.

AND WIRELESS SYSTEMS ARE GARBAGE! They always pick up interference.

So do you think that would that be a likely route then?

Back of monitor - towards kick panel - along front and rear door sills - under rear seat - under trunk lining - to camera

It will be easier to figure out once I actually have the car, but i just wanted to get an idea.

Yup, pretty standard.
