Re: Power Steering Fluid

Not sure about doing it yourself.

I received a coupon book from one local Nissan dealer and they charge ~$89.95 to change the power steering fluid. They want $85.88 to clean the throttle body, which I did it myself last Friday in 30 minutes (and it was my 1st time )

Anyone has the instructions some where?

I think you can probably do it by removing one of the hoses coming out of the PS resovoir. The return line from the steering rack when the car is off. Get a container to catch the fluid and put the hose into the container. Have someone start the car and turn the steering wheel. You should see fluid shoot into the container. Try to replace the fluid as it's being shot out. You don't want to run the steering rack/power steering pump dry with no lubrication. Keep doing and repeating until fluid coming out looks fresh. The fluid will squirt out faster as the steering wheel is being turned with the car running, and especially fast when it hits the end of it's travel where the pressure is highest. My friend helped me do this on my 1992 Taurus as the fluid looked real dark. I just replaced a leaking power steering hose on my 1990 Maxima SE and appears the system is very similar to the system in my 1997 SE. When the hose was leaking, fluid would stream out the crimp fitting on the end of the hose near the pressure switch mounted on the back side of the passenger side front strut tower. Don't know if that helps any, but it can be done. Just messy. Why do you think you need to change the PS fluid?

I want to change mine too, but I've been reluctant to because there doesn't seem to be a straight method to doing it Sheesh, if it was as easy as changing the oil then I woul have done it several times. Well, maybe not several, probably like twice in my car's lifetime so far.

Cheap method of changing the PS fluid (well, not all of it) would be to suck the reservoir dry with a turkey baster and refill with new Dextron III. Do that several times and you should have cleaner PS fluid.

Yeah, I remember you mentioning that before. I chickened out
This Monday I'm having my wheel bearing replaced by my mechanic, so I'll give him 2 quarts of Castrol Syntec Dextron III tranny fluid and have him do it I'm also having him flush my clutch fluid with DOT 3 stuff.
