Paint, how many gallons?/how was it? question

In the summer, i will be painting my car, headlights off, tailights off and maybe even doors off. how many gallons of paint will be needed ? first time painting a car, and it is already primered and prepped. any of you guys painted your car before? how was it? 2 coats of battleship grey will be good? and 2 clear coats on top of it?

i used a gallon and 1 quart because i painted the engine bay and interior but if the whole car is primed and your painting over it gray then youll be good with a gallon since you wont need to cover much put two or three but in my opinion do three to four coats and dont sand it right away give it a couple of weeks for the clear to get some good strength

why would you be painting with the doors off? just curious to your reasoning. because unless you need to match the jambs, all you need to remove are:

heads and tails
bumper lights
doorhandles
body side mouldings
chrome belt mouldings
mirrors
washer squirters

also a gallon of none sprayable basecoat will be fine, because it will mix into more than a gallong incase you run into trouble. a gallon might be just enough depending on your coverage. so getting it non sprayable, which mixes with a reducer, will cover those bases.

also yes a gallon of clear should also be good.

you want to put as little basecoat on as possible, just enough to have full coverage everywhere. you dont wanna go overboard.

as for clear, you want atleast 3 good wet coats on there. any less and you risk UV damage down the road.
