Maxima Help and the idiot dealer

Hey Guys, just tracked this site down and must say I am very impressed. I actually belong to the VW family and frequent our boards regularly for info., but I now turn to all of you for some help with my fathers car. He has a 2k? Maxima, pretty sure it's a 2k, anyway, he had the dealer put in an aftermarket sunroof, someone they contractd out to when he bought it, which we all know is a mistake. This is not a factory Nissan unit and rattles like a mother, but that's not the problem. About two weeks ago his check engine light came on and after taking it to the dealer, they flashed the ECU...and fried it? They give him a new ECU and get him on his way and the service manager makes a comment about the sunroof and it's "aftermarket" origin. This is not the dealer that put it in and the company that was hired by his original dealer is out of business(wonder why). Two days ago his CEL comes on again, calls the dealer and they claim the "aftermarket" sunroof is the problem. Whaddya think??? My theory is that there is a problem solely with the ECU and maybe one other component. I know that VW frowns on many of the aftermarket goods we mess with and I would guess that you guys get a similar sneer from Nissan. After two years of ownership, do you think the roof is the culprit?? I have to believe otherwise, but figured coming to you guys would payoff the way it does for me on my VW boards. Any help and suggestions are grateful...and long live the aftermarket

Here's my site and the car I dwell in:

Re: Maxima Help and the idiot dealer

When the ecu goes it throws a code to tell whats up? Any clue what the code was?

If the dealer installed the sunroof, there must have been a warranty on the roof. (maybe only one year, if so no help there)

I don't think a sunroof can burn out an ecu?? Blow a fuse maybe, but just fry the ecu after 2 years of use?

did the car do anything funny before the light? There are a bunch of TSB's on the 2k (5th generation) max.

If the orginal dealer installed the roof incoprrectly he is lible requardless of the warranty. (latent defect clause, defect was present under warranty but unkown)

good luck!

theMax-

I have to agree with you, the sunroof shouldn't do it. If it were after a week, maybe, but I know on Vdub's that even the installation of an aftermarket deck without cutting a certain wire can burn the 1552 diagnostic tool, but not the ECU.

Can you lead me to the TSB's you were referring to?

Thanks

The TSB's are in this forum in the sticky on top. (if the link does not work)

You do not need tools to read the code on the max. The ecu has a light on it, the ecu is in the the driver side of the center console. There is a link around that tells you what the codes mean. I don't have that link but I'm sure someone here does.

you will need a scan tool to pull the code from the ECU. Any generic ODB-II scanner should suffice. The sunroof causing a CEL?

You can also check for TSBs at NHTSA.gov for your dad's Max and your Kraut-burner.
