Shark Fin Removal for Vinyl Wrap

Planning on wrapping my roof with gloss black vinyl but would like to remove the shark fin first so I can get a clean edge as well as wrap the fin itself.

Just wondering if anyone has removed the fin before? I am assuming it is held on with double sided tape but before I start heating and prying on it I'd like to know for sure.

I searched but found nothing on this.

I'll definitely post pics when it's finished

Generally speaking, they are bolted on from the inside. You have to drop the headliner and unscrew the nut that is holding it on.

You know this for sure?

My 335i's shark fin is held on with 3M double sided tape. Real easy to remove.

I'm more familiar with VW, and all of them are bolted on.

you can always start to pry it off, and if it doesn't come free then you know that it is bolted down.

IMO that's a terrible idea. Just start prying? really? How bout spend a little time dropping the head liner? Then if you don't see any bolts or screws then you know its double sided tape. If its bolted and you start prying you could dent the roof/scratch the paint/damage the anntena. Just drop the head liner, hell drop the drivers side or passenger side rear corner and use a flash light to look in for bolts or screws.

I agree and that's exactly what I plan on doing. It probably is double sided tape but I would rather make sure rather than damage anything.

Looks to me like the cover is not bolted on, just the electronics inside of it, and they are nuts, which means once I remove the cover (either clipped on or taped) I can unbolt and unplug the electronics to remove everything. Then I can remove the left over glue, vinyl wrap the roof and then reinstall everything.

Now I have my answer....thanks so much

hey Araffio when you do this can you get some pics? I've been looking into a vinyl wrap for my roof and this would make it super clean to be able to remove the fin and do the fin individually as well

It isn't like I said to go at it with a 3' pry bar.
Your fingers can pry and give an idea of how it is fastened. Tape gives, bolts dont.

WTF? Quoting part of a statement, and then quoting the entire statement?
