6 speed issues

Not the way i imagined my first 5th gen thread would go but......

I have two issues to address. But i will give a little background of the vehicle. Ive had it for a month. The person i bought it from told me there was a small leak where the drain plug is. So i drained the trans.Replaced fluid with mt-90. Replace the plug and washer. Being stupid i thought the fsm said 4 7\8 quarts to fill. So i wound up putting 3 quarts in there before it started coming out the fill hole.. I drove around for a bit. Then I came home. Checked for leaks. It was leaking more than it did before i changed the gear oil. It is pissing all over the place(all of it on the driverside part of the transmission none on the passenger side)

It seemed like it was leaking from the trans axle seal(drivers side). I couldnt get a good view of it so i assumed it was the seal. So i replace the seal. Put in 3 quarts of conventional in it. Sat underneath car while it was in the air. Put it into gear to see if i can see any leaking. As far as i could tell there was none. Then I drove it around came back to check for leaks. Gear oil all over the place(all of it on the driverside part of the transmission none on the passenger side) Went underneath to check it out some more and it seemed that the seal was installed properly and it seemed like the leak was in the rear of the trans.

Then i looked at the fsm again to look at the schematics and noticed it said PINTS................ Drained trans again and measured out 4 7/8 PINTS. This is where i am currently. I will not be able to tell if it is still pissing until i can pressure wash all the oil off.(and i work nights and haven't slept yet.) So ill update accordingly. But when i drained the fluid the last time there was very fine(dust like)specs of metal. I was going to reuse the fluids but i noticed the metal in there and decided not to reuse it.

So here are the questions i have.

Would putting to much gear lube in cause it to leak like that? You would think it would come out the breather hose but it is clean. Or is it going to find some other way out?

Is it normal to have metal dust in the fluids?(no chunks) From my understanding(i may be wrong) there is a magnet in manual trans. and it should pick it up.

Oh i forgot to mention that the transmission shifts fine and has the occasional 3rd gear crunch. and it was rebuilt under the warranty a few years back.

Any input or advice would be great.

Andy

You can only put in so much gear oil that it starts coming out of the hole you're filling...
What is this 'conventional' stuff you put in? Gear oil? Or conventional oil?
Is it the axle seal that you replaced?

When I replaced my fluid I filled it up until it came out the fill hole. Thats the beauty of the manual. Just fill and go. Also, I do not recall seeing any metal shavings.

When I was filling it was on a slight incline. it was conventional gear oil. And yea it is the axle seal that I replaced. Thanks for pointing those out.

I was under the impression when you remove axles only a little bit of fluid leaks out?...at least with mine that's what happened. Yet you're saying it's pretty much flowing out?

Is it an internal seal? How many miles since last rebuild? No warranty left, I assume?

I drained the trans before i removed the axle. there was hardly any that came out when i pulled the axle. What i am saying is i assumed that the axle seal was bad so i replaced it. Even though it probably never leaked from there in the first place.I was pulling the axle to inspect the seal. But i just wound up replacing it just cause i was right there.

No It wasn't internal. It is the seal where the trans and the axle meet.I currently dont know where its leaking from. It seems to be coming from the rear of the trans. Which i cant see well enough to determine where the leak is coming from until i get a mirror.

Yeah its out of warranty. And the rebuild was probably about 50k or more.

Can rule out overfilling now.

Post was too long, only read what I quoted.

I try to only speak on things I've had exp w/, so w/ that being said..... No idea on the overfill.

Hahahahaha, perfectly normal. Your fluid should be more metallic than others since it's a fresh rebuild. Magnet not working you say? Take a tranny apart one day you'll find out if your magnet is working (Trust me, it's working).
