The "whip" : '91 GXE

My sister picked up a 6th gen over the summer and passed down her 3rd gen that was once hers and my fathers. My father bought the car with no intentions on giving it to my sister, let alone keeping it for anytime longer than a winter beater (after the death of his '87 maxima).

So, now it's finally mine and i LOVE it. I've been lurking the forums for a couple months now checking out the maxima's here (which are incredible btw) trying to get ideas for mine.

It needs loads of mechanical work, which my dad said he'll take care of. That leaves me with the cosmetics. I'll update this every once in awhile after each goal i achieve whilst trying to get it running and looking better before December 2013, when i get my license. I'm planning on going on the simple stance/hellaflush look, but with nothing serious.

So i would like to know:
- Good lowering springs/coils (include inches dropped please)
- Good rim size to get
- What wheels to get
*and just anything you guys know that i don't.

Which me luck!

looks good, first you cant really run coilovers on 3rd gens. suspension travel is too short. if you want a average drop, get Eibach springs. a bit hard to find nowadays though. Tokico or Koni struts go good with them, but theyre even harder to find.

Looks nice bro. Reminds me of my dads old 91.

Great car but we had a new problem come up every week. Eventually was in an accident and just never ran the same.

Thanks! Are there any easy to find springs? I've heard of B+G ones but not sure

So far I like them ride good lil on stiff side. Keep in mind it is a even drop front and rear so rear looks to be more of a drop than front.

Nice ride and color. I noticed from the plate that you live in Indiana. I bought my 3rd gen in indianapolis and towed back down to miami. I installed the B&G springs on an old friends GXE and it rode great. I am currently on Intrax and KYB shocks. Make sure you get the spring rubber mounts before installing the springs onto the struts in the front. Other than that welcome to the org.

OEM 4.5gen 16" (97-99) SE wheels look great on the 3rd gen, as well as the 5.5gen 17"(02-03) SE wheels as well...

I've been looking for 5.5 17" and can't seem to find them for a good price. There was a guy who had ONE inn grade D- condition and offered me $75 for ONE.

I'm hoping to get a set very soon, but i have no idea where to get them. Does anyone know any websites to get any?

And how much would they go for?

protip: car pictures taken in partial sunlight with an actual camera work better than car pics taken at night and in the shade with a phone.

What you want is these wheels

and this drop

Not sure I like either one. Commenting because I also am looking for the right wheel/ride height combo. I have the 4.5 gen wheels and I hate them. Those 5.5 gen wheels look best on a 4th gen. Am I the only one that likes the Oem SE sawblade wheels?

And that ride height.... Is there any way to go between that and stock? For those of us who don't want the 4x4 or low rider look?

It's scary how spot-on you are. That drop is perfect and those wheels are definitely what i need. What springs are those? and how much about would it cost to get them on by a body shop?

Thanks bro I guess you have good vision because some people can't see the rims on this pic lmao. But it intrax springs , it's pretty low if you live up north but I'm in Orlando fl. I believe it's 1.65 drop. I'm thinking about cut a coil on my factory spring to see how it rides and to get it a little higher then what I have now. But this car comes a long way. Bought it for $600

lulz. A cut stock spring will have far too low of a spring rate to keep the car from bottoming out after you cut it. Lowering springs aren't just shorter, they're stiffer as well.

those are intrax springs. TonyJr bought the set I had for sale and they are on his car in those post-drop pictures.

As far as a shop.. dunno. I don't let shops do anything on my car that I can do myself.

I always put my foot on the spring during the last turn of the top nut and just let everything shoot out into the yard.

man you crazy if you do the install that way. just go to a autoparts store that rents out a spring compressor and you are set. it only takes me about 20 minutes to have the springs n struct out the car and new spring install.

I alway rent a spring compressor. Just don't alway use it to take them apart. It's really not as crazy as it sounds...

With Intrax you can almost install the springs with no compressor since they're so much shorter. I sometimes just take the retaining nut off too and let it shoot off. Lay it down on its side, point it away from you, and have at it. I actually set up a box a foot or so away to catch it otherwise it can ricochet or more annoyingly get lost somewhere.
