02 Turbo Maxima in a 1/2mile race
02 Turbo Maxima in a 1/2mile race
So this past weekend I cruised up to the wannagofast 1/2 mile event with a few friends from SoundPerformance (huge supra shop) and we had some fun! Sadly, my radiator cracked after my first run, but that run spoke for itself the whole day =] the final trap speed was 145mph and in comparison to the other cars, that kicks ***. That beat almost every n/a car and was on par with boosted vettes. The zr1 guys were between 140-150mph and the murcialagos were 140-145. My friend's 1300whp supra placed first for non-shop built car and the fastest speed was ams's alpha omega gtr at 214?mph and then a landspeed talon at 209.
the next day there was also a white turbo 3rd gen. don't remember his name though
Here's a video of my run. I actually was lined up with someone, the slowest car there, a stock manual honda fit lol.
(idk how to embed it or w/e on the forums)
here's a few pics of it

twin turbo viper^ (maxima lurking in the back)

I'll see if i can find any more pics or videos of my car, kinda hard since I only ran once and nobody expected the maxima to pull a speed like that.

haha, yea the first few are my friend's dad, he's great at stationary pics but this was the first time he's ever taken pics of cars rolling and etc. first time ever at an event, for both of us, lol. the last pic was taken by someone else so you can see the shutter speed is diff and it doesn't look like im parked. it's weird how i was doing about 100-115mph where he took those pics yet it looks like im parked. i'm still trying to find more pics lmao, kinda hard since i only ran once though.
white turbo 3rd gen was my buddy maxmaxima91 aka jeremy.
145mph is really solid, nice trap. my friend's stock GTR did 146-147 consistently to give you guys an idea. my buddy's bolt on Z06 (C5 Z06) went 143, briguymax's high 10 second Z went 154, my boss' brand new M5 with exhaust went 147, etc.
that event was fun as ****. i hope they have it again next year.

Neal, we should meet up sometime at and have a few drinks and you can teach me some maxima awesomeness lol. I'll pm you my number.
Sadly, neal wasn't there saturday, i have a feeling if i ran sunday I would've gotten a few more MPH out of her since it was A LOT colder out. Plus, if i managed a few runs maybe i could've had an even better launch, who knows. Mine has never been dyno'd but considering the cars i've messed with im def 400+whp. i'd guess anywhere from 400-420whp but i'm not sure.
I weighed the car in monday at a junkyard at 3140 w/ a half tank and without me in it. pretty good for a 5.5!
here's another shot i found lurking the interwebz. hood pins are next on my list.. my carbon fiber hood doesn't look too happy lol.

it doesn't really have much weight reduction, i took my floor mats out, took the bottom seat cushion out, my spare tire and jack and carpet and i have a carbon fiber hood. still have plenty of room to lose more weight >: )
here's the gopro video of the honda fit that was lined up with me.

I seriously can't wait for the next event now, hopefully by then i'll have a better tune, a bit more work, and a bit more boost..

there's rumors about it, but no for sure answer yet. I really hope there will be. it's pricey, but damn well worth it to watch all the exotics go at it, then lose to nissans and toyotas lmao
it's not turbo anymore either i sold the turbo setup in like 2008. it's just NA 3.5 and runs the times listed under 3.5 in my sig (that was basically the last time i drove it in late 2010 when i went 12.9, i've only driven it around the block a couple times since then to make sure it still runs. it fires up like a champ. i hope one day i can get it turbod again. it's so close to being really really fast.
no, nothing exciting like that. lost my job, unemployed for a year, had to travel outside the country for work for a year, another period of unemployment, got married, wife got laid off, we're trying to save for a house, had to take a job that doesn't pay nearly as well as i used to get paid, student loan debt, etc. no money left for maxima stuff.

That's a pretty good trap speed for a Max.
Though I would definitely get hood pins moving at those speeds! Also cover up those fog light holes, at that speed they are air brakes.
I've been thinking of ducting the air through the radiator with coroplast sheets and venting out of the hood, sort of similar to what that Viper hood has minus that raised center section. Though it would look ricey on a Maxima, this would push the air where it would be most effective and reduce the higher pressure in the engine bay.
To bad events like this are far away from me as it provides a nice testing bed for aero improvements. These things don't really become effective until triple digit speeds and I've only trapped about 95~98 in the 1/4 mile.

Very nice trap speed i'm suprised the GTR didn't do better since it should be around 160 by the 1/2 mile mark.
It would be fun to watch the 1 mile long races they have in russia
On a side note i think texas does something similar.

Great runs grksoccerkid91.
I was looking across the results for the wannagofast results page and was pleasantly surprised to see a maxima with that impressive trap speed. I participated in the Florida wannagofast event last April in my heads/cam Viper. A stock '05 viper there was running 142s. Your 145 trap is stout especially since aerodynamics start playing a much more critical role at those speeds. I managed to pull a 165.x in my all motor Viper. I also managed to go off the runway....LOL. A combination of brake biasing (after actuating ABS on first run) and soft walled drag radials (combined with road racing tires up front) caused to me to pull a 180 turn. So sad, especially since I do road race the car and had never gone off the track until then.
Congrats again on that good run.

you would've been the fastest n/a car in chicago too! the fastest was a zo6 vette. I'm not sure if the conditions were better for you guys, but out here the stock vipers were running mid 130's to low 140. i don't recall an n/a viper pulling a better speed, there was on twin turbo one hauling *** in the 190's though.
how long was that runway??? it looks like it hard a short stopping distance. one of my friend's evo's came off the track the next day after his 187mph run. he tapped the brakes and the car darted left into the field.
If i still have the maxima turbod next year my goal is 150, by then i'll actually be tuned, have more "aero helpers" (tape off a lot of gaps, cover my foglight holes and etc) plus i discovered i had a huge leak before my turbo, so i want to go much harder next year and chase down more exotics =] and not blow my radiator up after one run!!
viper sounded badass btw!!

Good luck getting your car fine tuned for these 1/2 mile events. Better yet, bring it over to Texas and really wind it up for a whole mile. Any idea what happened to your radiator? Same thing happened to me on my SC 3.5, only to later discover that I had head lift, and thus pressurising my coolant system and radiator.
I do all my own stunts just like I did when I had my maxima (search my old posts). I did the full swap in my home garage. My OEM heads were ported by Greg Good, the best in the industry in porting heads. My tune was done remotely from California. The heads/cam/exhaust mods gave +200whp peak, and +230whp at redline. All this is on 10.5 compression, pump gas, and stock short block. This car also did 195.0mph at the Texas Mile while hitting redline in 5th gear.
Great runs grksoccerkid91.

That spin could have ended much worse, but the car sounds amazing. Great work, if i had a Viper it would be very close to what you have done.

that's pretty cool, crazy to think and head and cam swap would net those kind of gains.
I currently hold the record for NA at any wannagofast event with my 165.x. In Florida, there was a NA Z06 doing 161.x mph. I checked the results for Chicago, and fastest NA was 160.4 mph The stopping distance is about 1/4 mile, and does come up really quick. That TT Gallardo was doing high 180s and also had a very tough time stopping. More than a few cars went straight into the grass, including a ZR1.

i've been driving the car every day since the event and it still pulls like a raped ape with no looking back. smokes once in a while but thats from my turbo and crap oil return cause it's a oil burn smell after boosting once in a while, also my ic pipes have oil in them so i know im blowing oil around.
i'm really hoping it was just an old radiator and not a lifted head. I don't plan on doing a mile even in the maxima lmao. we had another 1/2 mile to stop so i had more then enough room, even my friend in his 198mph supra said he felt pretty comfortable with the distance.
and ya, those vipers are pretty awesome with work done, and from what i've read really easy to work on too.

Maybe. There is a supercharged silver viper in a lot of 1320 videos. That car has factory chrome wheels. For TX2k13, I was on my black road racing wheels. I also have the more aggressive 2008+ hood on my Viper. I did race a 750+whp Supra with the 1320 film guys riding shotgun on that Supra. Most of the videos from the Silver viper are not mine. I do show up in a couple of random videos. Search TX2K13 Celica vs. Viper and you will see my car.
