CEL P Codes 1400, 0450, 0446 - Need Help!

Hey y'all. Coming to the Forum first for help as always. Working on a very tight budget.

'97 Maxima SE, 181K miles. Non Cali. CEL always on. Car needs an inspection.

Just had the car scanned at a shop. All three codes came up. Fixed one, trying to avoid replacing all three.

P0446 - EVAP Canister Vent Control Valve - Fixed. Had it replaced first. Drove away and CEL came right on. Got home, reset ECU, pulled 0505 code (never can figure this code out). CEL came back on within 20 miles.

Still need to replace:

P0450- EVAP Pressure Sensor - $185 Not sure if it's a DIY for me.

P1400 - EGRC Solenoid Valve - Some online research says this part has several additional names: Purge Control Valve or EGR Vacuum Solenoid. New OEM part # 1495631u1A. $76

So... I want to replace one before replacing the other to see if it will clear the codes. I would rather go after the P1400 as worst case is I spend $76, get a bad back, and the CEL comes back.

To confuse the issue Chilton's only pictures an EGRC Solenoid Valve on the 1993 -1994 models. The only emissions component that's listed on the '95-'99 models that could be the renamed part is the EVAP Canister Purge Control Valve. Is that the same part?

Does anyone have any experience to know if fixing the Solenoid Valve will clear the P0450 code or is it a crap shoot?

Also, if anyone can point me to a picture / location of the part on the engine would be very helpful.

Nothing like a holiday to work on the car. Have a good 4th!

P1400 is really easy to change out. It's located near your transmission fluid dip stick and your TB. It will have three hoses connected to it. It should be green and be connected by another green plug. I just put a new one on the other day for my emissions too

EGRC (EGR Control) Valve is not part of the EVAP system; it controls the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve. So it would not resolve any of the EVAP codes.

Just in front of the EVAP cannister (underneath, just behind the driver's side rear door) is a bracket with several small EVAP related switches and sensors. Check and make sure all of the little hoses are on and the nipples are not cracked. I had one broken, but the short hose held it up so it looked connected. I bought the whole bracket and parts at a JY for about $25 and it fixed everything right up.

Thanks all, and the picture is perfect. Located to the right of the KS just outside the arch of the UIM directly in front of an below the throttle controls.

Looks easy to get to but the nut that holds solenoid valve is underneath the bracket, and because of all the hoses the only thing that will fit in there is a small 10mm wrench. You also need to remove the entire air intake assembly to be able to reach in and underneath the bracket from the right.

Installed it today and reset the ECU. Ran the car for 30mi. No CEL. Need to run the car for another 30mi or so and then hit the inspection station.

Here's to hoping...

You don't need to take off the intake to take it off. If you use a long pair of channel locks you can twist it loose and remove the bolt with your hand. That easy took me 15 mins.

CEL came back on. The code that came up was 1 long followed by 4 longs.

It was not an 0104 (1L, 4S)

Anyone?

the blinking 01 04 code translates to a P0500 DTC code. Use this link to translate:

http://boredmder.com/ecucodes/index.php

P0500 -

Malfunction is detected when ....
The almost 0 km/h (0 MPH) signal from the vehicle speed sensor is entered to ECM even when the vehicle is driving.

Check Items (Possible Cause)
* Harness or connector (The vehicle speed sensor circuit is open or shorted.)
* Vehicle speed sensor

See page 251 in the FSM

I let the car sit all day and just double checked the ECU to see if I read the code wrong yesterday. Not sure why, but now it's throwing 0401 - Intake Air Temperature Sensor.

If the shop ran the scan this week and came up with the P codes mentioned above, how did the 0401 show up after replacing the EGRC solenoid valve??

The Intake Air Temperature Sensor is mounted in the box that holds the air filter. Did you take the air filter box off and maybe forget to re-install/plug it in?

Yup, it was disconnected. Much appreciated! It's the one sensor located below and out of sight.

Reconnected it this morning with the car cold. Reset and re-checked the ECU for additional codes.

It's throwing an 0505 which I've seen in the past, but there's no corresponding failure according to pmhor's decoder.

Reset the ECU one more time and started it with no CEL.

Because it's out of inspection and it's 4th of July weekend, there's no way I'm taking it out and driving 50-75mi during the day today in NJ to see if the ready codes will reset. I'll update asap.

Thanks again for all the input.
