obd 2 readers, which one to buy??
i wan't one so i'm don't have to rely on auto-powned w/e a code pops up. some of them look really cheap, but are there some to stay away from?? thanks
Same here. I wouldnt "swear" by it but it is very useful and I use it almost everyday for something. I bought the Pro version ($5) and my bluetooth adapter was ~$13
I have the ELM327 and torque as well. Torque is pretty solid. But, from what I've read about the bluetooth ELM327 its a lot of hit or miss. Some work, some don't, some only work with specific makes, some only work for a week, etc.
imho you can't go wrong with this one for under $20....

You can add me to the 1,484 happy folks who reviewed it, it helped me to pass state emissions yesterday, and I know I need some EGR service....

I've got one that looks just like this
. I think I paid about $30 on ebay or Amazon, I forget. It works fine. I also have the Torque scanner and app. I haven't used it much, but it doesn't always connect, and seems to take a while when it does.
No joke it did its job. I passed emissions on Sat. On Mon., the SES lit up again for EGR
The main thing is the I/M readiness....once it goes into yes, I parked and drove straight to the inspection station the next weekend. I made it 189 miles between reset and the next SES.
I will get it addressed, just didn't want my inspection to hinge on it....

PLX Kiwi Reader + Torque
I have the PLX Kiwi reader running Bluetooth to my Android phone with Torque and it works great on 3 different vehicles. The Kiwi is more expensive than the $20 ebay devices, but it doesn't have the track record of random failure rate that those cheaer ones do either. It's refresh rate is reportedly faster as well. Torque app has way more features and customization than I can see ever using myself, real time monitoring of all sensors, etc. It has some fun stuff as well like 0-60 & 1/4 mile timing that could get one into trouble. As well as trip logging integrated with map images. Lots of stuff there, but this is getting into more than than just the original question about OBDII read/clearing. The point was, for about $100 you get a ton of capability compared to the dedicated LCD readers.
My ELM327 just died. I found it real handy using it with the TorquePro app on my Android. I'm now trying to decide between getting another OBD II bluetooth adapter like the ELM327 that I can use with my phone or a direct OBD II reader like the Autel MaxiScan MS300. Price aside, what are some of the benefits/disadvantages between the two?
I was leaning towards the MS300 but I've been reading of it having issues reading the 5th gen codes.
