transmission seal !?

Any of you had a problem with the transmission seal ?
I had the car at the dealer yesterday to change my brake and the notice oil under the transmission or somewhere near that and he said that the transmission seal is not good no more. He said that i can drive but i have to check every week my level of fluid to see if i have a major leak.

How much to repair that ?
The guys said 800 $ and more for the job

by "transmission seal", what do you mean? Are you a stick or AUTO?

Is it oil or tranny fluid coming out? How much? Did he say it was the rear main seal? Or something else?

Guessing he is talking about the Axle seals. I had mine done for like $200 when they were doing other major leak repairs.

OP, if you are talking about the Axle Seals, see the infor in this thread which will tell you the correct part numbers to order.

Its an A/T , he said that maybe it can be the main one, the main seal it is where the transmission is connect to the engine ?

"MAYBE" it is the RMS??? Doubt it is the RMS. I bet your upper oil pan seals are shot. Read thru this Thread especially if you are thinking RMS http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generat...d-leakage.html

Do the pics in that thread look like your leak? Our RMS does not usually go bad.

See the pic in this link and see where the RMS is in comparison to the upper pan seals and you will see why mechanics always say it's the RMS. http://www.courtesyparts.com/maxima-...1785_1788.html

Like I said before, Find a new Mechanic

Imo I think if it was a rms it would have blowback going directly back from the bell housing, and I've never seen a max that has had a rms problem. Looks like its coming from somewhere else

You do realize those seals are $10/each...and not too complicated to replace on your own.

Look for a write-up on how to replace the axle's, should take you about 30-45 mins each side. That seal is what holds the axle shaft in place.

Pretty easy if you have a tool set

Do you see drops of oil where you park? Are any of the oil levels, both engine or transmission going down? I have the same dark spot but it never leaves any oil on my garage floor nor do any of my oil levels drop between changes.

No oil in the garage , the transmission oil doesnt go down and i will check engine oil tonight and if you check your trans oil be sure to have your car hot and running on Park position to check if the level is good. You dont check your trans oil and your engine oil the same way

It's easy, trust me on this. It is however, a time consuming job. Drain oil, take lower oil pan, remove passenger axle, remove y pipe, remove crossmember, remove AC condenser and AC bracket, remove oil pressure switch and lastly remove upper oil pan. There will be two gaskets one on the crank pulley side and one under the rear main seal. The one leaking here is the one under the rear main seal.

First try took me 5-6hrs to disassemble with basic tools and not familiar with doing the job alone.

Second and third time I could get everything disassembled in about an hour and some change. The only main thing I focused on was cleaning the baffle, the oil pans and their matting surfaces to get a proper seal. You will want to clean where the pan and tranny meet as well. Also lining up the upper oil pan to the the half moon seals sucks when you don't have a second set of hands.

It helps when you have friends to help you put things back together too. I took a rest day to allow the RTV to dry with everything assembled except the lower oil pan. I did that last to allow air to dry the RTV from both sides.

Also, you can order the seals from rockauto.com for as low as 10$.

If you got the cash might as well replace the cradle mounts, oil pressure switch and DEFINITELY grab two tubes of black rtv, just to be safe.
