New 2001 GLE owner, lots of questions
New 2001 GLE owner, lots of questions
And just as many questions after reading the Stickies ans FAQs. Though I haven't read all the stickies to full detail, i've read some of them to full detail and skimmed over others and am still reading. It would be cool to see a section in the FAQ for all the acronyms you guys use.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First off some of the FAQs are broken.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd also like to know how to fix a the air bag light on an 01.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My goals are to get this car to last me a long while and to modify it specially stuff like suspension and brakes. I'd also like to accessorize it a little i've already found one vendor via a thread i made on reddit, that has stuff like blue tooth and back cams and distance sensors for the bumpers.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
one thing i hate about adding and modifying electronics on cars [even though i've never done it before] is having to run wires extra wires and find power sources, working on computers and electronics for a living i think gives me a leg up but, i don't like ghetto **** with wires you can see and crazy power sources like splicing in to the fuse box. If i accessories i want to learn where the appropriate places in the harness are to add more power lines i'm definitely not afraid to do any soldering by any means.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
first I probably should have mentioned is a 2001 Maxima GLE with 150k miles and it seems to have an electric everything along with leather interior, BOSE system, sun roof and heated seats as well as cruise control. also it's an automatic which is good for me.
but, at 150K miles and the 1400.00 USD price tag it need some Tender Love and Care.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sooo first up i was thinking this would be a good idea,
http://www.ebay.com/itm/140905167456...84.m1438.l2649
why not nip the water and oil pump in the but while you're at too since thye also don't last for ever and have 150K miles. i'd think there breath some life back to it with 150k miles. also new plugs and wires.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
then the water pump got me thinking about the factor radiator whihc uses plastic caps surely after 12 years the plastic would be getting brittle no?
I saw this thing on ebay, it's a single row which seems about right for a slim radiator.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/271240705833...84.m1438.l2649
I wonder if it would cool any better. could be interesting if i'm gonna be replacing my core support any way, since she has bumped a few times, hence the air bag indicator (they didn't go off).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
also figured ALL new filters might good including the cabin filter which i hear on reddit's r/Justrolledintotheshop is the least serviced part on a modern car along with timing chains.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
also a new fuel pump because why not? they all wear out some time.
also though it might be a good time to rebuild the starter and alternator.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
then maybe new struts i hear good talk about Tein and JICs but, i do not wish to affect the car's ride height very much, i say one st of tiens that is about 1.6 inch drop which is not major or so i would hope. Oh yeah i'd preferred to improve ride quality and handling, i know performance is always a trade off so i'd be willing to spend the money.
EDIT: while i'm still reading the suspension thread it seems no one installs Tiens and keeps a stock ride height.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Raxles sounded like they would have been a cool mod for longevity had not been losing money on them stopped making them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Read up on some of the brake upgrades, seems a lot of people when willwoods are brought up say to get the 1.3" rotors while Irish thinks every one advocates 1.6" apperntly either gives better braking feel and better brake pedal linearity.
Also i saw some of you put some strut braces in your engine compartments i'll definitely have to get one for the front and if it doesn't interfere with the trunk space too muhc or at all a rear one too.
Tires, i always thought if i got a car i'd run dedicated snow tires for the winter and low behold i saw some of your are running dedicated snow tires, so i'd like to hear about the perks of that. any good tires people are suggesting?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have heated seats in the FRONT any one made there rears heated too? I have less common form of juvenile arthritis so as you can image i like heated seats, specially in the winter but, then again so does every one. also i need two new front seat covers might not hurt to do the back seat too it has a few small tears.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Then comes the tranny any one do any moss to their trans maybe ad trans cooler? I have a friend who is very very skilled about trannys figured i talk to him about rebuilding it and if there are mods for more longevity so i'll definitely be talking to him but, also thought it wouldn't hurt to ask here as their may be some good info specifically for 5th gen Maximas.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rust, I have some rust at the very very top of the wheel well at the corner of the wheel well and fender. any guides? any patch panels?
the with all important stuff out of the way, i like making more power with stock parts like reworked heads with a port job or depending on cost all new performance heads? also any after market pistons besides J.E.? any cams?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
also jumping back to maintenance maybe you guys have some more ideas preventative maintenance?
I'm sure i'm forgetting some stuff but, that's it for now.
EDIT: the VIN decoder didn't work me does that happen often? I'll double check my VIN just in case.

Welcome to the .org
This is not reddit. Walls of text are generally not going to help you.
If you go into say..the 5th generation section (which is what you have!) you will find a small search option at the top right of the page. This is your friend.
Look into DJfreestyle's definitive suspension thread. lots of good info.
Have you pulled the codes? This will give you an idea as to where you should start. Before you consider throwing $ at modifications you should make maintenance your priority. You will also learn about what can be modified during the performance of maintenance.
Don't bother messing with the timing chain/water pump/oil pump kit from ebay. Unless you are experiencing a lack of oil pressure/leaking h2o pump/ T C slap, you don't need to mess with it. If you are seeing issues in this area, I would suggest OEM parts.
Any autozone, advance, pep boys auto parts store can pull the codes for free. You can search them on here or google. The later usually links here.
A y-pipe is the best "bang for you buck" modification for your application. An O2 simulator is also a good investment. Since you have a 2001 you have four O2's. The secondary's can be sim'd.
Good luck and happy motoring.

I tried my best to break it up in para graphs, i go and double space it, but, i feel i brought up stuff not explained in the stickies like the Exhaust thread whihc based on what I know now needs updating, and in one case the stickie/faq is flat out broken and the information is not there. hence why said it's broken.
I'm looking to make it a very very very long time before things break. i definitely want 300k, and i don't want to have fix things when they break. surely there is a way to fix things before break? most cars these days dies just a little after 200k miles and i think i rolled over 160+ K not to long ago it sure is creeping closer and closer to death it seems, unless these puppies routinely hit 300K with no issue?
I am working my way through the suspension thread, since the stickes and fAQ is the very first thing i started doing.

Crawl before you walk. I agree, don't "fix" it if it aint broken.
Ever since the org went through an overhaul a few years back, the links changed names, so that's why a lot of those links are broken. Also, a lot of the much older links pics aren't valid any longer so those are also outdated.
But everything you asked can be answered through a search, even use
to search maxima.org for you. I've been successful with that as of more recently.

well i'm no stranger to if it ain't broke don't fix it but, what happen when the timing chain snaps and it bends all the valves or the block over heats when the water pump fails or your stranded because the fuel pump died or the bearing spins. at what point do you consider replacing worn out parts?
Also does any one know where i can find the original MSRP of 5th gen GLE back in 2001?

The problem is i have a lot of questions. Also it isn't really that much text, just pick a line read and read no more and
you find a question.
there is just so much i want to know.
Yeah you can use google but, then why even bother having stickies. The whole concept of a stickie is to have easily and
quickly accessed information. i'm no stranger to forums just google my handle you'll find farm roe than you could ever
read. I can honestly say this forum is in a state of disrepair, broken links lack of moderation broken VIN decoder,
mismatched out dated visual style, out dated stickies etc etc the good part is there is a vast wealth of information here
assuming you guys have the attention span. I'm sure I've lost you already.
However this place could be really, REALLY killer with a nice update but, all things it's all about time and money. That
said i guess i'll try googling up on the bose system and as usually continue reading what i can for more info. who knows
i'll proably answer some of my own questions then share what i have learned.

After 7 seconds of searching I found this:
http://forums.maxima.org/audio-elect...nt-thread.html
http://forums.maxima.org/audio-elect...nt-thread.html
well after reading some threads from 2 am to 7 am i'm convinced the engine can't even be worked with out removing from the car, pretty cure the timcing chain assembly can't be repalced while it's the car.
think for now i'll focus on getting new filters in side and out except for the fuel filter and maybe plugs and wires and an optima battery. EDIT: and the OBX header kit.... and maybe some tien struts.. and maybe better brakes...

this makes you sound very paranoid. Look for the symptoms of these parts failing, then fix. Timing chains don't usually fail without warning.

TC's and tensioners are done all the time. You sure you were searching this forum? Also, don't change the TC, maybe the tensioners.
My 95 hasn't been changed and it's build date is 3/95, and it has 247k on it.

damn dude were you the one saying your fuel pump is still fine too? i just find so damn hard to believe they would make such a nice car special in 2000's that would last 12 years let alone 20 like you car.
[QUOTE=5aprilc;8834882]
REALLY!? do tell, i never would have thought there would be any warning to a loose/worn timing chain does it have some sort of slack sensor? or does the computer just throw a code once it finally starts jumping/skipping teeth.
Hell yeah i'm paranoid, **** should i be so lucky to have a car so nice, i was told it cost 40k new, which around here would have cost more than some peoples homes.
man if i had to give this car up i might die a little inside, this car has spoiled me and i've only had it for a few weeks. everything about this car is DELUXE. It makes my old 95 s10 seem like a rickety piece of dog ****.
I guess i'm just need some convincing testimonials that they really do hold up that well. my family has been resonantly well off but, we have never owned a car this new usually mid 90s honda's with the exception of my dads 2000 s10. i really have never known a car this nice, sure you hear about them on tv but, have one... well obviously i've become obsessed and gone off the deep end.

that's... that's... pretty good reasoning. besides Saturn i've never heard of cars lasting so long. i guess instead of rambling i could just say at first it seems to good to be true.
any one else or is there a thread with people who have posted year and reported miles?
also any one want to let me on the symptoms of a worn timing chain?

then there are the 2003 and alter saturns. in 2003 GM did away with saturn's engineering division and put all ****ty pre made GM parts in them and they suck ***.
there is a local mom and pop saturn dealer that deals exclusively in the pre 2003 satunrs and several family friends bought one, on one of which the odometer quit working some where around 200k mile... many years ago.
from what i'm learning from you guys these 95 and alter maxima's are the model T's of luxury cars.

....just messing w u...
now i feel i bad.
perhaps maybe possibly after i get things out i could possibly maybe help improve the stickies or make one of my own.
