2003 with strange symptoms

Hi all

My daughter called this AM that her 2003 max, with 137K was acting strange.

She was driving at a speed around 40MPH, level and straight road, when the Tach read zero RPM. Car would not accelerate, she pulled over to the side of the road and waited a couple of minutes and drove off normal. She reported the engine never died and did not have to start it up before driving off.

no check engine light on, she reported no other lights on the dash like battery, oil etc. (just changed the oil last weekend, it is full)

I have not checked for pending codes but will tonight. My suspect is fuel issue like a filter or pump or a loose connection in the tach circuit. I am not sure what the consequences are if a tach wire is loose.

any suggestion would be appreciated. I will edit post with updates as I dig more tonight.

Can't be fuel related, has to be electrical because if the tach read zero and was true, the car would have turned off.

Alternator would be my second guess. Same thing happened in my 4th gen.

I would think electrical like the MAF.

Thanks for the replies, I will focus on electrical.
Where does the Tach get its signal from?
Would a loose position sensor cause the symptoms described, crank position, throttle position, cam position etc. I have not checked to see if there are any codes pending, will do that tonight.

Tach gets its signal from the VSS I believe, on the tranny.

If there's no codes then you could just have poor grounding on the instrument cluster itself, and simply loosening and retightening the screws on the back of the cluster has been known to help.

More information.

My daughter was driving home when the engine died. CEL was set and code P0340, camshaft position sensor.
Searched the forum, this could cause the problem.

I will be checking loose wires in the cluster.

any suggestion would be appreciated. I will edit post with updates as I dig more tonight.

More information included above, thanks for the suggestions
