car shut off while driving and wont start

so i just bought a 1999 maxima se 5 speedwith about 130k miles on it and after i bought it after driving about 3 miles the car stopped working as it was moving, i hit the gas and it wouldnt work and i tried shifting gears and hitting the gas and it still wouldnt work, i pulled it over and tried to start it and it wouldnt start or even turn, the windows and lights still worked but the car wouldnt start, after looking for a while, i found that the serpentine belt was missing and so was the tensioner, is that the reason it wont start and the gas stopped working? or it an even bigger issue? thanks guys im new here and appreciate any advice or help

Your dash should have been lit with the battery light blinking..

yea it was, like the lights and **** still worked, the gas just wasnt working and when i pulled over it wouldnt start, does this mean i mean a new battery too? im just confused as to if the serpentine belt missing would cause the car not to accelerate or start

If the serpentine belt is missing, your alternator isn't spinning, thus not charging the battery. Meaning your car was running off of the battery, and the car was just struggling to stay on when you were pressing the gas peddle. Get a new serpentine belt and tension, put it on, get a good charge on your battery, then see what happens. If the battery and brake light are still on, your alternator is dead and will probably need replaced. If not, then you shouldn't have anything else to worry about.

Cheap batteries can only take a few cycles and be junk but not always.
Test your alternator.
