well i bit the bullet and got the maxima...

now going through and slowly starting to replace the things wrong with it.

i pulled 2 codes off the SES system. P0037, and P0138.

I understand one is an 02 sensor, but which one exactly is it? best place to source the replacement?

p0037 something with heating element?

any help on what to replace there?

thanks a lot guys!

ill get some pictures of it after i get it cleaned up a bit and worthy of better pictures

P0037 and P0138 are both codes for O2 sensors and both happen to be for the same sensor, Bank 1 sensor 2, HO2S2-B1. Bank 1 is the side of the engine along the firewall. Sensor 2 is after the pre-catalytic converter that is built into the y-pipe.

In the future please tell us what year as there are differences between each year model. For this question, it doesn't matter.

its for a 2002 SE model.

is there a local/forum regular we can source parts from? or best to just go to advance or some local auto store?

While Nissan calls the sensor you need a Sensor 2, parts places call it a downstream sensor.

Most people buy new sensors rather than used sensors. Advance Auto parts or other parts places should be fine. Best prices are probably on rockauto.com if you are willing to wait a couple of days for the shipping. The stuff on e-bay is so hit and miss that I won't chance it myself. Driving with a bad O2 sensor won't really hurt the car.

Edited for clarification. Bad primaries will effect fuel economy as they are the ones used by the ecu for fuel adjustments.

looking on rock auto for the o2 sensor, im very confused. i see i need a downstream sensor. but they have them labeld front and rear.

Looking to buy a bosch, can someone verify if this is the right part number?:

BOSCH Part # 15224 OE Type - Exact Fit; Heated; Wires: 4; Length (in): 31.5 One of our most popular parts
Downstream Front

One 15225 and one 15224

You only need to replace the one that is bad. I don't know why trinistallion19 said that, he must have been thinking of something else.

Downstream rear. B1 S2, (Bank 1, sensor 2). Sensor 2 designates it is downstream. Secondary sensor.

I'm in the same predicament code wise (p0138) and will be replacing both bank 1 sensors and the upstream bank 2 sensor just to do it(already replaced the bank1 downstream and have about 108k on the odo). I hate to beat a dead horse here, but I still feel like it's unclear as to which Bosch downstream sensor is the correct sensor for bank 1.

As TTwizted13 points out, the schematic in post #2 shows each sensor labeled as primary(a.k.a. Upstream/Front) or secondary(a.k.a. Downstream/Rear). My confusion is around aftermarket parts being labeled as downstream FRONT or downstream REAR since both downstream sensors in Nissan's schematic are labeled as REAR.

As far as aftermarket parts are concerned do they consider FRONT or REAR to be Bank 1 or Bank 2? Based off the position of the downstream bank1 sensor I'd say the correct Bosch part is actually #15225 due to the added wire length and not #15224. So which sensor is the correct sensor?

Is there any functional difference between the two downstream sensors or is it just the wire length being different?

EDIT: Searched a little more and this seems to answer the question...

The difference for the front and read designation is because of the length of the wire attached to the sensor. The sensors themselves are the same.
