Offer price for 2012 leftover

A local dealer has a 2012 Maxima on the lot the car has never been titled. It has 3000 miles on it (it was used by the manager for a short while.) The sticker price is $41, 000. I inquired a few months ago about the car and was given a price of $33, 000. I thought this was high and walked away. The dealer called me today and asked me to make a reasonable offer. Looking for advice on what would be reasonable.

Thanks!

I would say maybe 23K. Is it a sport or Premium and what options ? 3,000 miles makes it a used car not a leftover regardless of who put the miles on

Need more info about the car ... trim level, packages, etc.

Check True Cars.com and Cars Direct.

A quick search on True Cars shows them going for $27k - 33k. That's for SV's with 0-5000 miles.

Lots of other factors to weigh (how much do you need/want it, trading another vehicle, financing, etc). Seems like you're in the drivers seat though, I'd start in the mid to high 20's and see what they say.

Its an sv premium. The following is from the ad:

Nissan Maxima SV Premium. This Maxima includes Navigation, Heated Leather, Bose Sound system, moonroof, aux i-pod hookup, alloy wheels, six airbags, 290hp 3.5L V6 VQ, sport shift mode, and more.*

I was a little low on the miles. I'm assuming I can't get cheap dealer financing on this car...

Thanks for the input.

Secure outside lenders before you talk to the dealer about financing. That will give you even more control over the deal. Check with your local credit unions; they usually have the best rates.

I like how this car is equipped. I think it is an important plus that, although this car has a few thousand miles, you KNOW the car hasn't left the dealer's inventory. You know it is not an early turn in, not an early trade, and not a problem plagued buy back. That would be a big deal to me and worth paying somewhat of a premium over a truly "used" car that had been sold and titled. Years ago I had very good luck buying a couple of dealer "demos" that were deeply discounted and really as good as new. Mileage was similar to what you are looking at. YMMV...

Truecar.com has 2013 SV Premiums for $30K

IMO being a year older and with over 3,000 miles deducts $7K from the price.

$23K is about what that car would bring as a trade, I wouldn't go much higher since it's been sitting ungaraged for ~2 years and the tires have ~ 2 years worth of dry rot

Not to mention a 2013 can get you 0% financing

I bought the 2012 Maxima with same equipment exactly two years ago. Sticker $41,000. and I paid dealer $33,000 cash. So, two years later, you should be able to do better than $33,000. I think $25-$28,000 should buy that car. Suggest you be sure that the "in service" date will be your purchase date for warranty purposes.
We use the Maxima for commuting purposes and have had 38K worryfree highway miles. We just change the oil/filter every 5-7K.
Best of luck!!!

In addition, this car has been driven for 3,000 miles by people who do not own the car. Who knows how its been treated, especially during the break in period. Think of how people treat rental cars because they dont own them.

I think this car is on craigslist:

http://syracuse.craigslist.org/ctd/4177173009.html

It's not a "leftover car" its a "demo" car.

They have almost 6k miles on it apparently and want $30k. It's a demo car unknown territory to me I say same as a rental/fleet car. low-ball them $22k?. $30 too high.

In the Mnneapolis area you can buy a new (13) premium tech for the same price, just under $30K and get 0% financing

$30K is way way too high. I agree with the thought that you could buy a '13,or even a '14, for not a whole lot more than that. Edmunds shows that a used '12 with 5600 miles and equipped as this one has a trade in value of $23.7, private party price of $25.5, and dealer retail of $27.3. I also agree with low balling thembigtime. If they don't accept, I would look for a '13 or '14 which are priced much more fairly and are brand spankin' new. JMHO...
