2001 5spd transmission questions

I'm mechanically inclined and what have you, done plenty of shade tree jobs as well as making my living as a maintenance mechanic in a factory.

That said, I've never torn into a manual transmission, cv joints an clutches sure. I'm looking at a 2001 that has a failed input shaft bearing and it'd be fantastic if this is something I could fix vs installing an expension used transmission that is likely just as worn out. Besides the clutch, is there anything I could and should change if I've got it apart and does anyone have any idea what kind of cash outlay I should be looking at(yes I know it's a shot in the dark).

Thanks guys!

You are better off buying used.
True story.

I don't yet even own the car, but I'm very serious about buying it....been without a maxima for a couple of years and ready to revisit. car-part doesn't have any local trannies looks like around 600 plus shipping or more for a used one and they don't have alot less miles on them....for some damn reason I like to buy used broken stuf....

Also of note, it's sitting at 140k miles.

If you're comfortable with doing a clutch job then you're at least 50% there, but read up and decide for yourself.

doing transwork is complicated, not intellectually difficult, but if you don't have the proper tools and try to get by without them you are gonna have a frustrating time. there are plenty of little gotchas that can mess you up, too. definitely pay attention to that fsm.
