screw in my tire

A large diameter screw got in my 17" low profile tire. A guy at an independent service station took it out for me, and repaired it with a rubber type plug.
Should I replace the tire or is it OK with a repair?
Thanks

You should be just fine as long as the tire doesn't leak. Try not to drive at very high speeds too. I've picked up more of my share of screws and nails, always on my bike. (strange huh?) I used the tires until they wore down a bit and just keep my speed under a buck 20. (I have a heavy wrist when I'm on 2 wheels!)

Rubber plug should be used only temporarily. You should go to a tire specialist. They have special plugs meant to last tire's life and can be drived at max speed. It's around 20-30$ for the work.

If you have the Bridgestone Potenzas, I'd use the screw in the tire as an excuse to get all knew rubber.

Hey martinf, you should bring the tire in a repair shop and have them put a cooked patch inside the tire, this way you are sure that the tire wont leak. The rubber plug are not the best repair, there good for quick repair.

Re: screw in my tire

Rubber plugs are so unreliable they are illegal in the state of Maine. Now the shop MUST take the tire off and patch it from the inside. Too many times the screw/nail/rock did more damage to the inside that wasn't visible from the outside, and the tire blew at high speed. I agree it should be about $20-$30, and then it will be fine.

What are you riding on now?

Yes, they are expensive and ABSOLUTELY YES, they suck!! When in the rain, you should make sure your insurance is paid up...they always feel like a hydroplane accident just waiting to happen...and no, I am not talking about high speeds, just a speed to keep up with traffic and not be a menace myself!
