This is the 3rd Maxima I had this same issue with, This time it was Cold On my B Day we were Partying all night at my boys shop I had my system jamming all night so i just left the motor Idling with heater on full...Well Next morning was Hot (Texas) and my ac wouldnt get cold for anything well my other two Maximas had same problem for about a week then started working fine again pretty weird. well its been 2 weeks and nothing, So i checked the Pressure and their is not a drop of freon in system! I dont understand why the Maxima's do this and what could of caused this? too much heat? i doubt it cause hood was open all night idling.

Its a 00...The other two that did almost same thing were 95 and 99..

What was the selection you had the heat blowing out of? Floor vents / dash vents / windsheild vents?

 

Dash vents. I put one can Freon in, started working then leaked out again. About to remove everything and replace all O Rings and new Drier and fill her back up with some Good Freon hopefully its not the Condenser or Evaporator.

excessively idling a motor smooths out the crosshatches on your piston walls, when the crosshatches start to wear out you can get oil burning. idling for 6 hours is waaaay too much, why you even did idle it that long i dont understand

 

Wow, I consider idling for an hour insane.. Goodluck gettin er back together. You probably shouldn't do that again.

 

Never heard of that in my life.....But one the O rings blew out in ac. is all good again. and it idled that long because system was jamming all night. Its not bad at all for a car to idle all night.

 

Keep telling yourself that. Lol.

Excessive idling definitely has detrimental effects on an engine, as stated above.

 

You are just going to randomly replace seals?

 

I'm not by any means trying to say that it's a really great idea to idle an engine for any extended period of time... I'm curious though why this wear would occur at idle and not, say, on a road trip where the engine may be running at high speed for 8-10 hours?

 

When mine idles for 30 mins I get concerned lol. Thats a lot of time

 

i cant remember the whole thing on it but its to do with the slow piston speed wearing the cylinder walls. even when you idle, the slower engine speed is harder on the connecting rod bearings. when youre cruising the load gets spread out, idling it doesnt.

 

Thats what I'm thinkin...I feel bad for my engine when im doing 75mph @ 3200Rpms for hours...I've always been told Idling it good for a Engine, As long as u have good cooling system and Clean oil.

 

Feel bad? If your car was doing 75 mph at 3200 rpms forever, the engine would practically last forever. Cars love the highway.

Cars do hate the city though.

Standing still and idling in crazy traffic with the AC on full blast is the time to feel bad for the car. In fact, if you want the car to feel better when idling, you would put the heat on full blast. You and the passengers would sweat to death but the engine would feel all good inside lol

 

highway is great for vehicles. no carbon buildup, fresh cool air flying in, tranny doesnt have to work hard, nothings better. thats how my 3rd gen had 420,000km on it without ever having any major repairs to it

rush hour traffic is way worse, stop n go traffic is hard on the engine and trans, heat with no cool air hitting the radiator, etc. thats why i cant understand why so many people do JDM engine swaps, Japanese cars may have only 100,000km on a 25 year old car but within that was alot of idling in Japan traffic jams

thats how semis and the like run for millions of KM with no issues, highway driving is the easiest thing on vehicles

 

why wouldn't you just start it every 45 mins to charge battery, also you were at a shop so if it died a boost is easy !

 

Engines can't feel or sense time. As long as the engine has good oil pressure at idle speed and the cooling system is up to par, which any good engine should, then it can idle all day long for years on end with no ill effects. There's no load on it, it's basically free spinning. Wear and tare are at a min.
