My low end sucks, is it because of my intake?

I have a '99 Maxima ES automatic and I've had a JWT popcharger for almost 2 years now and I just recently got an exhaust like 4 months ago(not a catback). I've noticed that whenever I go WOT, the car has a lot of low end lag and once the rpms rise to like 3 or 4, that's when the rpms start to fly to redline. Is this normal?

I'm concerned because the other day when my friend was in my max, I floored it and he was like wtf was that?? He told his uncle who owns a garage and his uncle said that it shouldn't do that and that it's not good for the engine. He hasn't looked at it yet but he suspects it's because theres too much air entering the engine and not enough gas. Has anyone else found this? What can I do?

what do you mean by that? lemme know

but if u got a muffler alone, i believe ull lose low end (maybe significantly?) because u lost a source of backpressure for low end torque-

someone explain if a muffler alone (or with y pipe) will make the car SUCK at low end

yes it is because of your intake.. the quickest intake for bottom end power is the stock intake.. dont worry your not the only one that didnt know before you went out and bought a new one..

The low end loss is made up by the high end gain IMO.

What my friend meant by that was when the rpms suddenly jumped, he thought that was unusual. I dunno, maybe it's because he drives a 2000 5spd Jetta and that doesn't happen to him? Is there anything I can do to get back my low end loss without switching back to my stock airbox?

Not much. I haven't changed my intake for that reason. I love the low end torque and its good for highway driveability. I'm always travelling so until I find an intake that doesn't effect the lowend, I may not switch.

all aftermarket intakes will make you loose low end regardless, unless you get a SC or Turbo, hehe. I hate my low-end but i dont complain on the fly though 40+

i was thinking of either installing cai or y-pipe (not both because i don't want the car to get too loud). after reading all this, i might install y-pipe instead of cai, but does y-pipe make you lose low end too??

My JWT came out in after about a year of use. Went back to the K&N drop-in filter with Greddy cat-back. This is a better setup for me. It's quieter plus a better low end.

if you normally drive your car and shift around 3000 then the pop charger is the WORST mod you can own. If you push your car on a daily basis up above 4000 then its your best friend. Nathan, I recommend you get a CAI for your needs, but driving style should be the deciding factor. Either way, there is NO harm to your car from either intake.

My stock air box mod has been performing excellent. Just that little bit of extra air only when it's needed (patented trap door) does the max very well. I have no low end loss at all and I think some small gains up top. It just pulls harder when I open her up. Besides the throaty growl you hear is awsome. I think I've come up with a mod that takes the place of the POP charger. Only with better results being there is no low end loss at all and it's much quieter.

What is your new mod to replace a POP? I have the POP and would love to have both high and low end power.

Do a search on "stock airbox mod" and you should find it there.

For the heck of it on Saturday I am going to

Re-install my stock intake with K&N panel filter and see if I have more low-end and less top end. I have only had the JWT for 2 months I will post my findings.

Cold air is good.

Yeah, like someone said above, hot air just makes your pop charger worse, especially at the low end. Try an OSCAI to restore some lost low end torque. I used a shop vac tube (blue) and routed it from the cone intake down under the bumper: See pic below...

I then covered it up with a black plastic gutter chute: Look under my right fog. Man, it scoops up air really well. The filter is actually cold when I pop the hood and touch it after driving. See pic below:
