Brakes Noises

On the way to work this morning, I heard some grinding noises coming from the front somewhere. As soon as I hit the brakes, the sound would go away. This continued on for like 5 miles. I heard the sound died out and the sound of it working itself out The sound resemble grinding noises and scraping noises. Did I hurt my max driving like that for 5 miles, (was late for work so I didn't have time to park and diagnose the sound). Also was what the hell was that? Did I get something suck between my brakes or wheels? I did stop 2 times along the way to work and everything seemed fine and there was nothing out of the ordinary. Any help would be appreciated.

i had the same prob, about 2 months after i bought the car. i read in the manual that your brakes make a scraping noise right before you need to change them. it sounds like a rock is stuck in there, and it gets louder as you go faster.
