Turning ignition on without HIDs coming on

I've had my Maxima about a week now, and I'm still getting used to it. I love the intillegent key and the push button start, but I am trying to figure it out. I know that if I have the intilligent key without pressing the brake the following thins happen.

Press once = the ignition goes to ACC
Press twice = the ignition goes to ON
Press three times = the ignition goes off

Is there a way I can go from ACC to OFF? If I'm messing around with the radio and playing with the settings, I don't want the headlights to come on if I'm outside at night. I'm sure that it's the best thing to do to have the lights turn on and off within a short period of time. Basically what I'm trying to do is figure out how I can use the ACC and ON positions when its dark without the lights coming on. I'm sure it's something simple, but this car is worlds more advanced than my old car and I'm adjusting to it.

Are you headlights set to Auto on the headlight switch?! I turn mine in manual vs. Auto! I turn my radio on without the lights coming on!

Have the same question, and also about going from ON to ACC. Made me miss the good 'ol days of just turning the key back once. From what I know, the headlights will automatically turn off to your set timer in settings after you open and close the driver door. If you do not open the door at any point while performing the operation, the headlights will always be on until you actually put it to OFF. Check your car's settings, and there should be a preference in there that is short enough to accommodate your situation - not a perfect solution but it should work.

I leave my lights on Auto, but when I approach an underpass or before I start the car in the garage, I turn the switch to OFF. Maybe I'm being overprotective, but I do not want a failing ballast. I may have the dealer set the automatic headlight timer to come on later so that way it will not turn on every time I go through a freeway underpass.

To turn the engine on without the headlights coming on you must simply set it on the off position. If its on Auto of course its going to turn on.

To keep the accessories on while turning the engine off press the start button 2 times fast...That should be going from On to Acc. I have the Nav/Tech package but I think as long as you have the color screen you should be able to go into the settings and set the headlights to not stay on once the car is off etc...

What zoemaine said.

I have never kept my headlights set to auto, so don't have the problem of them coming on when I don't want them on. I do it this way because I have always read that the lifespan of HID headlamps is determined more by the number of 'off-ons' than by the total time they are on.

One word of advice - Those still operating with the 530 CCA OEM battery need to be very careful about such things as listening to the radio/stereo when the engine is not running. It takes very little drainage of this 550 CCA battery before it no longer has the power to start the car. That has been a problem posted here on the org many dozens of times since the beginning of the 7th gen.
