how much is too much?

i was changing the oil on my car, its a vg and i put in 4 quarts of mobil 1, i checked the oil and the oil was a good half inch over the high mark, i started it to see if pumping the oil through the engine would cause it to go back to a normal level but it didn't, the specs say that 4 and a 1/8 quart is what it holds, are they any disadvantages to too much oil? so far its been alright but im just checking

It's bad....if overfilled, the oil will actually start to bubble and foam from the cams "mixing it" as they bat it over and over from overfilling. Don't forget, if you didn't change your filter, there is some oil left in it too.

Don't you mean the crankshaft? From "windage", where the crankshaft just barely contacts the pool of oil and churns it up nice and frothy as well as getting oil wrapped all around it?

Windage is bad at high RPM (where it's worse) because instead of pumping liquid oil, it could be pumping frothy oil, which is bad for lots of reasons.

I'm not quite sure how much extra oil 1/2" over the full mark translates to (1/2 litre? 1 litre?) but I'd think about draining a bit out and saving it for later if you can.

(Anyone know if some of our engines come with windage trays or crank scrapers?)

You didn't wait long enough for all the oil to completely drain into the pan. Plus the oil filter will hold some oil also.

I've never been able to put more than 3 and 3/4 quarts of oil in a VG with an Oil Filter Change......this was from experience with previous 3rd gen VG Maximas.....

Hmm odd. Some say sometimes the dip stick is off. ie.. you have to put exactly xxx amount of oil in(per manual), wait then note how that registers on the dipstick. Then you have to re-mark it to reflect the 4.5 quarts or 4.25 quarts or whatever.
