brainstorm on how Maxima could get back on track late 94 style
One problem with the Maxima is the margin on the car--when they can only get 22k for a 255 hp SE it doesn't leave much profit for the dealer or manuf, esp since it takes a 1k rebate to sell. Nobody is very enthusistic given this situation, be it the factory, dealership, or customer.
Why not take all the remaining 2k2 parts and make performance cars? Take all the gaudy features that don't help performance and throw them out the window! That means power seats, air conditioning, Bose radios, moonroofs, rear spoiler, fake leather, and so forth. Now in its place, tune the motor up to maybe 275 hp, put 18" at least 8.5" wide, real shocks and struts, front brace, different oil cooler, flywheel and clutch.
What you have left is FWD unfortunately, but still, it'll perform hopefully. Have a certification on the window saying the car will not be discounted like all other Nissans, and will never be subject to any incentives. maybe the price is 24k but since they have all the parts, do they produce more cars that can't sell, or do they make something better out of those parts? LIfe is giving Nissan lemons, do they just sit there and su** on them or will they make lemonade?
Who am I kidding, they don't have the vision of the Acura Type R or BMW M3 Lightweight, or do they? People seek out those cars and are wiling to pay, and they're not cheap used either. That would be quite a different Maxima....

You have a good point that Nissan has no "Type R" vision, though.
Acura seems to have a winning formula with their cars. A base "TL/CL/RSX" car for the masses with decent power but still well equipped but then the "Type-S" version for the enthusiast/performance crowd too.
How bout a Maxima SE-R?
But Nissan still has a problem with the Maxima in that it has no direct competition. It competes indirectly with the Avalon and they're trying to steal away Acura TL sales with it. It sorta seems like the old Altima where it's trying to compete in two different markets (against both Civics and Accords) with the same car. That never worked out for Nissan and hence the new Altima.
Whatever Nissan does with the Maxima, I hope they make it good
