Dirty brake fluid??!!

Ok I had my dealer change my oil last weekend, they have a great deal where you get 2 years worth of oil changes for $40, so it would be silly to do it myself I would lose money. Anyway, the service manager mentioned that I might want to think about replacing the brake fluid because it was dirty? Huh?

My car only has 35k miles on it. I have owned 11 vehicles in the 21 years I have been driving and I have never once had to change brake pads. I usually trade at about 120k miles so I have just never had to. I have never heard of changing brake fluid independent of doing a brake job. When I questioned him he said Nissan recommends changing it ever 15k miles!

Is this guy yanking my chain and just trying to get me to spend $ on something that is not needed? Or is there something different about these cars that would require very frequent brake fluid changes??

if the colour looks fine and theres no silt in the reservoir, wouldnt worry about it. brake fluid is hygroscopic and absorbs moisture, you should change it every few years but every 15k miles seems absurd. all my vehicles the brake bleeders are a rusty ball and i just drain and fill the reservoir with a syringe every few years no problem. doesnt get the old fluid out of the lines but whatever

id say change it every 2-3 years

I have always flushed brake fluid every 2-3 years. If it means anything, I've never had any issues with ABS systems or Traction Control, or stuck pistons in calipers.

It might cost $ 40-60 to have this done by a mechanic, more if the bleeders are all rusted solid.

I do this work myself, I have the Motive Bleeder System, takes me about 1 hour to do each vehicle, less for the motorcycle )

I would think that if you don't change the brake fluid every 15K miles. As recommended by Nissan. If you end up having any issues with the ABS system, traction control, or stuck pistons in calipers. Your Nissan dealer may not cover it under warranty.
