Warm the car up, turn it off, and unplug your TPS sensor. Then start the car back, rev it a few times and adjust the screw behind the TB until the idle is at 700 or so. I followed these instructions which came from a Haynes manual and it worked great for me.

just go to pepboys or autozone and pick up a haynes manual. it will show you where the tps sensor is. the tps sensor is towards the rear or the engine bay, it's easier to just pick up a manual and see it for yourself.

We will assume you know what the throttle body is. Then the rest is easy. The TPS sensor is the black electriacl plug on the opposite side of where the throttle cables attach to your throttle body. If your standing on the driver side of the car looking at the throttle body, the throttle cable is on the left side, and the TPS is on the right side. After your car has been driven for about 5-10 minuts, shut it off, unplug the TPS. (plug on right side of throttle body) Start car and adjust your idle using the stop screw. It's on the side where the throttle cables are, just below them. Set the idle to 800 in drive. No lights on, no A/C on.. no load on the engine at all. 800 RPM's will give you a smoother idle all around. Shut the car off, plug the TPS connector in again. *** RESET THE ECU*** Start the car and your idle should be perfect.

Yea, I think when you start it after disconnecting the TPS you may get a CEL light. Doesn't hurt anyhow.

When idle RPM is adjusted a little higher, say from 600 RPM to 800 RPM, it will consume a little more gas at idle. If the same car is in a normal driving mode, does it also consume a little more gas with 800 RPM than with 600 RPM? My guess is no.

Your guess is correct. Besides how much time do you spend at idle anyhow?

What is CEL light? Is it in the gauge area? Will it disappear after driving for a while? Is it any good not to disconnect the TPS but just to adjust the idle adjustment screw a little at a time (try and error), so that the CEL light won't show up?

CEL = Check Engine Light

It goes out after a while depending on what triggered it in the first place.

If the TPS s disconnected, doe this alway trigger the CEL. Did the CEL go on when you performed this procedure?

The CEL will not be triggered by disconnecting the TPS sensor once. If you start the car twice with the sensor connected, the CEL may come on due to the two trip detection logic.

As for idle speed affecting gas mileage, maybe it was just coincidence for me, but after changing my O2 sensor, my idle speed jumped from a steady 700 to around 900 or so. First two tanks of gas had horrible mileage. After lowering the idle back to 700 or so, gas mileage seems to have stabilized. It may be due to the new O2 sensor, but I think the higher idle speed has something to do with it as well. I say set the idle at 700-800 and leave it at that.
