Oil leaking/Blue crust?

I was doing my oil change yesterday and I noticed around the bolt there was leaking oil. I always do my best to not to tighten the bolt too hard, but this wasn't because of a loose bolt. Also I noticed some blue crust building up on the outside of the bolt.

Does anyone have any advice on this or know of this issue? Ive searched the forums and thought maybe I need a new bolt?

The bolt should never have to be changed if undamaged. If oil is leaking its probably because of the crush washer, just make sure you put in a new one every time you change the oil.

You didn't say how much oil was leaking, like a small puddle on the ground or just a oil smear around the drain hole.

It was smeared but when your looking from under the car I saw some bushings covered in oil too. Does the filter also have a washer? (Other than the one it comes with)

The oil filter does not require any washer. It is manufactured with a built in rubber gasket that seals the filter to its mating surface. Just make sure you smear a light coating of new oil on the gasket before you install the filter.

The blue crust is from water and other road salt oxidizing the copper crush washer on the drain plug. Most folks dont replace them every oil change but they are very cheap and if the oil is leaking around the plug, that is where i would start ( I always replace mine but it isnt always necessary, maybe every two or three changes would be my personal max)

As Richard66 mentioned, a thin coat of oil on the filter gasket and hand tightened is all you need. Just be sure to clean the oil filter seat on the motor to get rid on any debris. It should look nice and clean before you spin on the new filter!

Okay awesome thank you. I read that Autozone has the washers? Does anyone get them from there or just from the dealership?

Also if its not dripping too much Could I wait till my next oil change? I just did my oil change yesterday and if I replace this washer im sure I would have to re-do my oil change lol

I buy my washer and the filter from the dealership. I only use one so I can't see buying in bulk, but some here do. As for the loss of oil to put a new washer on it would be a minimal loss if you have someone help you. Don't warm up the car. Pull the drain plug and immediately put you thumb over the hole. Have someone replace the washer then reinstall the plug. You will only loose a couple of ounces.
