USB Music Questions

Hi All,

Loving my new Max Platinum!

I'm setting up a music stick and have a few questions that I can't figure out from Google searches or the owner's manual. My older Note II phone doesn't support Bluetooth audio, and I don't want to get attached to SiriusXM, so I'm going the MP3 route.

1) What's the max data size for a usb stick? Will 128 gb work and still allow me to see all of the music folders, or is that too big?

2) Will playlists work? Should they be in a M3U format?

3) When I plug in an USB (a smaller, older one), I get a message asking me something like: "Do I want to replace USB voice data". Any idea what this means, and what I could break by saying yes?

Thanks all,

Steve in Philly

Car will only read FAT32

FAT32 MAX FILE SIZE = 4GB (most mp3 files are only 4 -5 MB)
FAT32 MAXIMUM PARTITION SIZE = 2TB

1) You can stick in a 128GB stick and it'll read fine as long as it's FAT32
2) Highly doubt playlists will work. Can the system see FOLDERS?

I also have a Platinum.

I use a 64G flash drive about the size of the USB plug itself. The music is all MP3 format and I just copy the folders and files from the computer. Music is usually organized with one folder for each artist and then the albums (or CDs if you wish) are subfolders containing the MP3 files. My '13 Altima would see and display all these folders, so I could see a list of all the artists. Then I'd select an artist and see all the albums for that artist. Then I'd select the album and see all the songs on that album. Then I could select the song I wanted to start with and either listen to all of the songs in order, or randomly over that album or over the whole flash drive (which is what I do most of the time).

The Max will see only the folders with MP3s in them, and not show me the artists or let me select an artist. All I saw were the album names, many of which were simply "Greatest Hits", so not much help. I had to rename all the music folders (albums) to start with the artist name. Example: "The Beatles - Rubber Soul". It was a pain, but it works now.

The Altima and Max will only "see" the first 512 folders. Like I said, I use the random all option and I have personally removed all but the songs I really like on each album. I currently have 386 music folders and it works great. If I want to hear a particular song, I simply push "USB Menu" and then "Folder List" and I see all by albums sorted by artist. Then I can select the album and I get a list of all the songs on that album.

I also doubt that play lists will work. And I don't know what "USB Voice Data" is, but I don't get that message. When I start the car, it first displays a message "Reading USB Data" and then starts playing right where it left off when I turned the car off the last time.

I believe USB Voice Data lets you use the voice command to tell it to "Play Artist Beatles" or "Play Folder 'Party'. I looked into the voice commands that gives you a list of what options there are and what to say, and a few music commands showed up. Not sure how well it works as all of my USB music is scattered and not well organized. I usually keep it on random to deal with that.

Here are all the USB voice commends. Maybe is stores all the folder and file names when you put in a different USB drive.

Audio USB - Turns on the USB, selecting the last played mode

Audio USB Show Folders - Displays folders in the USB memory device

Audio USB Play Folder <folder name> - Plays songs in the selected folder in the USB memory device

Audio USB Play File <file name> - Plays songs in the selected file in the USB memory device
