Coolant Type

hey guys just had a quick question I have water in my radiator right now as its summer, but we are coming up on fall and winter and need to replace it with coolant, I have a 2010 Maxima S 3.5 L and just wanted to know how kind of coolant I need to use, in the manual it just says Nissan Coolant or long life coolant but don't say what color. and how much thanks all

You can use the prestone one from Walmart that is not the dexcool. Anything except for dexcool will work

I remember I called nissan and they told me only the 09 "required" their specific coolant but I call BS. My mother uses Peak in her 2010 Altima and has had no problems so I think you'll be fine with peak.

I will readily admit I have not researched coolant in years, but if you remember the whole dexcool problem this is my recommendation. Every manufacture now seems to have their own "proprietary" blend. They could all just be ethylene glycol with different color dyes, or maybe it's something different, I'm not sure.

my philosophy is if it has the proprietary mixture just go get a gallon of that from the dealer and top off with that. It's not worth the risk. Plus mixing colors you'll likely end up with brown which might give you a false impression as to the condition of the fluid (although you should be flushing before it ever gets to that).

If you are going to flush the whole system then feel free to go get a bottle of regular prestone ethylene glycol and go to town.

Go to a dealer and get the Nissan OEM antifreeze for peace of mind, and besides it is not too expensive.

why would you use water in your radiator? if the headgasket is metal, it will rust. After water, any coolant will be an improvement.

Anyway, my 09 came with Green (regular life coolant), somewhere around 2010, Nissan started using Blue (Long life) coolant in their cars. The two coolants are officially compatible. However its very hard to fully drain the coolant system. I could only find references to two engine block plugs in the service manual, but not their location.
Just last weekend I drained coolant via radiator drain, got about 5qts out.
Then added 6 qts of Nissan oem blue coolant. The blue coolant is non-silicate type.
The only crappy part about the Nissan Blue coolant is that its only sold premixed 50/50. I would much rather buy concentrate and mix it myself.
