Is it my transmission on way out?

It is automatic transmission. I need to drive car like 5 miles at highway (speed 60-70mph) till it finally throw in 4th (or as we call overdrive?). If I slow sharply and try to speed right away I hear strong hit in transmission (is it that “transmission sleep”). Basically after I slow I need to give trany a second to get to lower speed I guess.

The torque converter won't lock until the transmission gets up to operating temperature. That takes a few miles depending on the temperature. At 60 without the converter locked you'll see slightly higher RPM's. Does that sound like what's happening?
