Power off on any gear

Hey guys!

This is my first post on this forum. I recently bought the 2016 Maxima in Saudi Arabia. I have noticed that I can turn off the engine even when the car is Drive (D), Reverse (R) or any gear for that matter. I am too scared to try to turn off the engine while the vehicle is moving (for obvious reasons ). Is this normal??!! I believe this is extremely dangerous. I also drive the Volvo XC 60 and something like this on the Volvo is out of the question. I am starting to wonder if this is a defect and need to show it to the service center.

The second I turn off the engine, when it is on any other gear other than P (park), the screen on my HUD turns red and it asks me to shift to P after the engine cuts off. Just want to know your thoughts on this.

Pretty sure that's normal for almost all of these push button cars. Think about it, you could turn the key off while in drive...couldn't rotate all the way to get the key out until in park, but it's been around long before the push button start.

Your car doesn't have a HUD. A HUD is a heads up display whereby you can see information projected onto the windshield, thus keeping your head up to see vital information.

Your car is operating as designed.

I played with this over a year ago, and I seem to recall that I could turn the engine off while the car was moving down my long driveway (over 300 feet), but not if I was going fast. I could also restart the engine while rolling down the driveway. We had a thread here somewhere at the time, and folks here seemed to think everything was normal.

From the Nissan Maxima Owners manual (USA version)

EMERGENCY ENGINE SHUT OFF section 6-2

To shut off the engine in an emergency situation while driving, perform the following procedure:
– Rapidly push the push-button ignition switch three consecutive times in less than 1.5 seconds,
or
– Push and hold the push-button ignition switch for more than 2 seconds.

Thanks guys for the information. It is comforting to know that an accidental press of the button while at very high speeds will not cut off the engine.

I meant the car's speedometer. Haha

And good to know that this is normal.
