Oil Type?
Oil Type?
What kind of oil is recommended for the 8th gen VQ engine? I'm assuming the factory is using conventional. Has anyone switched to synthetic? Is it worth the switch? My 17' has 3k miles on it and I am most likely going to be doing all my own oil and filter changes. My cousin has a 14' Infiniti q50s and strictly runs synthetic. Just looking to hear some feedback from others.
When you read your Owner's Manual, you will see that Nissan recommends 0W-20 SAE SN rated motor oil, or 5W-30 SAE SN rated motor oil.
You will find 0W-20 in both semi-synthetic (synthetic blend) or full synthetic. 5W-30 is sold the same way, plus what is called regular (Dino) oil.
Use what makes you sleep well at night. What is important is that you check your oil on a regular basis, and don't let the oil get low in your car.
Stick with 5K oil and filter changes while you are under warranty...one less headache if you have engine problems.

i used 5w-30, full syn, stp, with high cap stp filter (on sale at $35 set).
ran it up to 7500 miles with 80% hwy, with a few lead footing on sport mode.
and it was almost the same viscosity as new.
and the level barely reduced.
my mpg went down approx 2-3 mpg every fillup (91).
currently at 36k miles odo.

I will never fault a person for changing oil more frequently than necessary, just so I know he knows that Mobil 1 synthetic is a super oil that, in normal driving conditions, will test just like new after 10K miles, and even be perfectly suitable for 15K miles.
If I was in charge of a fleet that included some vigorous drivers, or sometimes drove on dusty roads or pulled trailers, I would consider changing Mobil 1 after 7K miles, otherwise change at 10K.
But, like I said at the top, I will never fault a driver for changing sooner than necessary.
On another point, if I was going to be driving in very hot weather, I would stick with 5W-30 SAE N, but if I was going to be driving in very cold weather, I would use 0W-20 SAE N.
For my mild driving habits, I use a synthetic blend and change at 5K, although the blend could go 7K if needed.
