Not enough information.

Bring a spare battery with a good charge.

So why was the car sitting for a year?
Did they stop driving?
Do they drive another car now?

Why did they park the Maxima?

Which repairs does the Maxima need?

How experienced are you concerning car repairs?

They stayed to me they just didnt need it anymore. So they stopped driving it and i noticed it sittin under their garage this past summer. The heat not working was the only thing they told me. Maybe the core or a bad blender door

Just didn't need it any more.

Ran when parked.

That' what they all say.

Perhaps the heat was not working because the water level is down due to a leak.

The leak is possibly related to the water pump, perhaps the radiator. The radiator is cheap and easy. The water pump is perhaps cheaper, but a big pita. Or an hour or three of shop time.

The car might be worth checking out.

I'd reccommend looking into a block test kit.
It sniffs for exhaust gas in the coolant.
The block test is to rule out a blown head gasket.

Depending on the amount of time it has been sitting, the gas tank may have a surprise inside.

One of my neighbor buds picked up a Volvo that had been sitting for a few years with this fuel tank.

Gasoline will "go bad" after a while. The volatile part of gasoline evaporates and the remaining stuff will start to thicken and will turn into a jelly. This takes a long time, maybe 2 - 3 years. It mostly depends on how exposed the gasoline is to the air. The fuel tank does have a small amount of ventilation, while the gasoline in the fuel lines is protected. Usually there isn't any problem for one year, but that cannot be guaranteed.

so, my advice is, 1. go start it up,turn on heat to see if it's the core or it might have an air bubble in the system,.2. check fluids, 3. if all good, take it around the block and listen for noises, 4. check lower rad support for rust and the rest of the car as well., 5. take obd 2 scanner to check for codes even if no c/e light is on., 6. make an offer based on your findings if you like what you see, w/e they're asking, lower the price by 500.00, enjoy your new maxima!!
