Tranny: aamco rebuild or junkyard jewel
Like so many others, my 90 SE tranny is slipping in overdrive after 2000 RPM. I have been considering putting in a used one from a junkyard with a 6 month warranty for $125. Checking my options, I just recently visited aamco to get an estimate. They say anywhere from $950 to $1850 (this was described as the "worst case scenario" driveaway price. With this I'd get a 1 year/10K mile warranty. I hear they fool the customer with a low estimate then add on charges and the bill can get as much as $3000. Does anyone have any experience with these corporate transmission places? It would be nice to have new OEM parts put in, but I'd hate to be ripped off in the process.

the junkyard tranny sounds like more trouble than its worth...I'd get an estimate from a smaller, non-chain tranny shop, Aamco will usually overcharge since they are "experts". 3 years ago my 91 GXE tranny cost me $2000 for a complete rebuild and 3 year/20,000 mile warranty. I say keep looking for a better priced shop to do it.

What's your intention with the car. Are you planning on keeping it for long or short term. Keep that in mind when making your decision. My tranny rebuild a few years back was also $3000 which included a new torque converter. (well at least I hope a new one is in there ) and solenoid pack. I also used a independent tranny shop. Most good tranny shop will either be ATRA or ATSG certified, maybe that can also help your decision.
