Take a look at 97 FSM page EL-73/74, perhaps for CD player or A/T device illumination.

What trim level is your Maxima? GXE, SE, or GLE? I believe only fully loaded SE's and GLE's had illuminated ashtrays; this could be the power source wire for it. I could be totally wrong though.

Looks exactly like the wiring for the illuminated ashtray in my 1997 i30. Going through part diagrams, it seems that the illuminated ashtrays became standard after the 1998 model year Maxima.

it is an SE. This is an additional plug to the plug for the ash tray light

Can't tell you what that plug is for but I noticed the same plug on my 95 SE 5 speed when I removed the Bose head unit for repair. I too wondered what it was for.

Wiring diagram shows a cigarette lighter illumination plug, a white 2-wire connector, in close proximity.

Seems that a member might want a lighted ash tray in a previous 98 maxima. . I would be easy to retrofit.

there are two of the 2-wire with white plugs, the ash tray light wire is plugged into the ashtray and is run in separately from the cig light power. This one is additional to the ashtray light.

there is a spot on the fuse block inside the car for heated seats, since mine does not have them, I wonder if it is for a heated seat switch

Oh well, no clue.

Assume no change from 95/97FSM: The 2 wires are for dimmable interior illumination. Red with blue stripe (R/L) provides fused constant 12VDC. Red with yellow stripe (R/Y) is variable ground for changing brightness/intensity. The ashtray illumination ground wire is black. It is constantly grounded.
