2013 Maxima SV a/c Repair (compressor)

hello
2013 maxima SV

My compressor stopped kicking in with the a/c recently and I don’t think it’s damaged but the shop quoted well over 1,000.00$ to replace (full kit).

im getting a 2nd estimate however.

is it normal for a compressor to be working fine and then just stop coming on?

No it isn't normal, if what your asking is if it's possible? It sure is! happened to mine a month ago, ice cold one day, hot as an oven the next! Had to replace the compressor.

The same thing just happened to me a couple weeks ago. The compressor stopped engaging completely and had to be replaced. I only paid $535 for a new one and also new drier component.

1000 bucks is a bit steep! What are they replacing exactly?

It could be just the compressor clutch not engaging. That is a way easier fix and only cost me about $50 bucks and an hr of my time

Magnetic clutch!

Bought my replacement on Ebuy for 20 bucks and a 3 jaw puller from Harbor Fruit for another 20. Pulled the old one off and the copper windings inside were toast. Whacked the new one one with a hammer, after trying to draw it onto pulley with old center bolt, breaking it, and drilling it out of course. Blowing cubes in a couple hours. Junk yard wanted 250 for compressor and I just couldn't see paying that to pull the damn thing myself. Further look into the compressor I had revealed that it had been donated from a Murano during the car's stay at the dealer. I figured replacing the compressor again with another used unit would just lead to another untimely failure. In the wise words of Jesse Pinkman "Magnets *****!!"

Do you know what they replaced? Just the compressor or everything?

Knock on wood, my 2010 Maxima with 164k miles has not needed many big ticket item repairs aside from the TSB repair on the drivers seat. My a/c is still going strong 10 yrs later too.

What part of the country are you located in? Were your a/c components rusted out?

The 2012 that I just bought with 76,000 miles had it's compressor out. My trusted mechanic estimated $1000 to fix which sounded right. I take care of our fleet maintenance at work where I have certain vendors I work with and the last time I had a compressor go out in a 2014 Dodge Ram Master Pro it was going to be $1500. I haven't decided to fix it yet because I hate the damn thing.

I plan on fixing mine soon as well as having the transmission serviced.
