Replaced Sunroof Motor Problem Now
Hi, I replaced my '97 sunroof motor and the sunroof will not lift. No noise and no current that I see with a volt meter.
The original motor did the same. The roof does slide back with either motor. I went to a electrical shop today and they said
that I need to retrain the sunroof.
I'm not finding directions anywhere on how to retrain a 4th sunroof and I wonder if it's possible.
Anyone know if this gen Max can have their sunroof retrained?

My sunroof has been temperamental for years. It will always tilt up. It will almost always slide back. But when it comes time to close, whether its tilting down or sliding forward, it mostly just won't. I replaced my switch assembly with a lower mileage unit from a junkyard but it behaves exactly the same. I have seen others say it's the motor, but I don't believe that. I don't know the inner workings of a pinch sensor, but I believe that could be the problem. There must be some piece that measures resistance to stop it from closing on a finger and that piece has worn out over time.
I'm curious to hear what your shop says.

I ended up not using my mechanic.
My original main objective was to replace the sunroof glass because it leaked.
The seal on the glass was worn and surely the drains were clogged.
The motor problem looks like the power going to the motor is fluky, works sometimes,
sometimes not. I never realized this until recently.
I had dropped the headliner earlier so I was able to replace
the glass without the motor working, so I'm happy.
I don't care if the sunroof works. I never used it anyway.
So in the end the motor need not be "trained" and I probably did more work then I needed to.
I bought the glass from
https://www.used-sunroofs.com/
and was happy with the purchase. It was around $200.
Glass is in excellent condition. At first I thought that it was new.
The glass that came out was full of rust. I would guess
that the rust was clogging the drains.
Anyway, hope this helps someone in the future.

The 4th gen Does not have a Retrain procedure for the sunroof. Its straight wired to Cut you fingers off until the fuse blows. What I would suggest is to take down the dome light assembly and On the back of the switches, Touch each wire with a Soldering iron to remelt the Joint. Over time the wiring here may appear solid but it is not. Its a Very simple circuit. These days You can buy a used assembly for under 100.00. Typically less hassle than going the disassembly route twice.
