P0300 Multi Cylinder Misfire mystery

Hi folks,

So, I got my knock sensor all squared away however I am now getting a p0300 error and noticeable misfires. Loud popping intermittently. This seemed to happen out of nowhere.

I used an active test on NDS and it looks like Cylinders 1,3,5 are misfiring or not even firing most of the time. I can turn them off individually and turn all of them together and the RPM doesn't drop at all(at least anything of notice). I can turn off cylinders 2,4,6 together and the motor dies. When I play with 2,4,6 you can hear the RPM decrease and see it on NDS.

No other codes except for ones I expect which are codes for power steering, etc.

Any other suggestions? I am going to setup my test light on the injectors and see if the ECM is firing them.

Here's what I have done:
- Checked the wiring harness, all are connected.
- Replaced spark plugs
- Checked for spark by grounding out the spark plug and trying to start the motor(with all ignition coils removed).
- Checked continuity of the fuel injectors
- Checked 12v at the fuel injector
- Replaced PCV(the original one seemed to have a small leak).
- I swapped coils between 1,3,5 and 2,4,6 and the issue remained on cylinders 1,3,5.
- Checked and cleaned the engine grounds
- Compression in cylinders 1,3,5 are good.

did you replace knock sensor with an OEM one? did you use new intake manifold gaskets gaskets?

when I was having issues fixing a misfire I ended up having to rewire in new coil connectors for my coils.

another thing to consider is that the rear coils, injectors and everything for the rear bank ( 1, 3, and 5 ) has 2 separate sub harnesses from the main engine harness

Not OEM, though I mounted it to the frame of the car for now. Honestly I may just bypass the knock sensor entirely. Without a knock sensor it wasn't misfiring at all.

I checked the wiring harness and there is continuity for the rest connector. I'm gonna check from the ecu.

do the job right or dont do it at all.

for starters get an OEM knock sensor and put it in the correct location.

I appreciate your comment but do the job right isn't a thing here. This is a 02 Sentra with a 10 Maxima motor(was a 2003 maxima motor which is why i posted here, my bad should have been the 6th gen chat) with a engine harness from a 03 maxima and a cabin harness/cluster for an 06 Sentra. Computer is from a 03 maxima. Honestly, if I wanted to do the job right, I probably wouldn't have made this awesome abomination.

Good news is my efforts worked and the misfire is all gone. Even with my non OEM parts.

nah you posted in the right place. 5th gen harness/ecu is what matters. 7th gen engine is a very common swap. at least you got it

the reason why I had to rewire the coils is because the OEM connector wasn't making good connection with the coils.

as for a knock sensor I would get a used OEM one before going with an aftermarket one. my car is an 02 with 368,XXX miles and even after doing the HR swap I'm still on the OEM knock sensor, it's never given me any trouble.

Glad to hear that you got it sorted out. What was the fix that corrected the misfire?

Yes, please post the resolution for the sake of those that have this same problem in the future.

I am not 100 percent sure but I think it was a missing plug on one of the vaccine lines. I think the bank was getting an over lean condition.

It seems to be fixed. But now I am getting a high idle. What I find really odd is when I run a idle air volume learn while the car is running using NDSII, it just continues to count up but the idle goes down to 650-700 where I want it to go. Based on what I saw on YouTube it has to be a vacuum leak.

Sadly I am still having issues. I have a high idle and once in a while a misfire.

NDS is nissan data scan. https://nisscan.com/?v=0b3b97fa6688

I attached a few videos.

I did a smoke test from the front valve cover and notice this smoke. It's from the left side of the motor right above the coolant inlet for the motor. Any idea where the smoke could be coming from?

I also coped a few videos of what I am dealing with.
