When do you know if your tranny is fried?

I was driving around today (quite spirited I must say), but after a while when I came to a stop, there was smoke coming out the engine bay. It did not smell funny at all, just seemed like steam. At the time I thought it was because of the cold. After letting the car cool down for a while I began driving again, this time quite carefully and the shifts started getting worse the more I drove. There was no leaking at the bottom either. The rpms began fluctuating and I felt as if the torque convertor did not want to engage and disengage right. Even slightly stepping on the gas seemed to do this. The worst was yet to happen though... after I got back home, while trying to park I realised that my Reverse gear was no longer working! The car just sits there revving with no motion at all. Its pretty dark so I cant even see if any hoses got unplugged, I'll do that in the morning. I have the VB mod on my car too. Anyone know what is going on?

Where you trying to shift an auto? If it's dead it woun't do anything, but if you got steam coming from the engine thats not the tranny. If you hear a click, grind, skewl, anything like that and all stops its dead.

I bet you sprung a leak in a transmission line. Check your fluid level.
