GXE, GLE, SE and now an ES?? What's goin' on??

I am looking for a maxima and I know of the GXE, SE, GLE and all the differences between them but I was at a dealer today and they had a 99 ES (not a typo ... ES and NOT SE).

I'm in the Vancouver BC, Canada Area so It might just be a Canadian thing but we do have the GXE, GLE and SE up here also.

It had the foglights, alloy wheels, and white faced gauges which are features of the SE but it was missing the BOSE and the spoiler.

So what is this thing??? Some sort of budget SE?? Somebody fill me in please!!!

It's a 99 and they want $22,000 CDN which is $14,700 US.

the ES is just the American SE but with VLSD. Buy it. Now. WHY ARE YOU STILL READING THIS?

are you sure?? I have a 99 ES... how can I tell if I have VLSD?

Personally, I would call ES a special edition.

not sure how the VLSD works exactly, but in priciple, it "applies power from the wheels that slip to the wheels that slip." kinda of like all wheel drive but for the front wheels...

I hope it doesn't apply power from the wheels that slip to the other wheels that slip...thats just more wheels that are slipping!

try jacking your front end up. rotate one tire. if the other tire rotates same direction...ie both forward, you have VLSD. If they rotate opposite you probably have a regular transmission...probably. i'm not exactly sure about the VISCOUS part. it may be kinda like an automatic and not engage all the time...can anybody else help on this one?

I wish i could get a LSD on my 5 speed, but the only one i've found is like $1500 and that's just for the parts.

I believe that all Maximas sold in Canada have a limited slip differential.

I remember way back when I had the same question when I saw one here in MA.

You fellas forgot about the mudguards. Partially painted the same color as the car.

Search is your friend!!!

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....highlight=VLSD

"Viscous limited slip differentials use the properties of silicone fluid to apply torque to both drive wheels. When one wheel starts to spin, it causes half of the housing holding the silicone fluid to spin. When the fluid is forced to spin, it gets thick and transfers the motion to the other half of the housing. This takes place smoothly and quickly, and because it still allows some slip, it is suitable for front wheel drive vehicles too. The silicone housing in Viscous limited slip differentials is a sealed unit, so the differential uses regular gear oil for rear wheel drive applications, or transaxle oil for front wheel drive units"

ES vs GXE vs GLE vs SE

I also live in Vancouver and in early January bought a 98 5sp SE. In my research, a dealer gave me a copy ourt of a page in one of their sales manual. It was for 99 Maxima's. I'm not going to type all the details, (I'll scan it and send it to anyone who wants it) but it says: GXE contains and then there is a whole list of stuff. Then it says "ES" is GXE PLUS:and then there is a whole list of more stuff eg: 16 " wheels, sport suspension, fog lites, power drivers seat, ABS, Traction Control System (with AT), VLSD and a bunch of other cosmetic stuff.. Then comes "GLE is GXE +AT Plus: and then there is a whole list of all the luxury stuff. Then it says "SE is "ES" plus Rear spoiler, power roof, leather seats, 4 way power passenger seat, Bose stereo, side airbags.

I was told the the ES was a "special" aniversary addition. Aniversary of what I don't know. Bottom line, an "ES " seems to be a tricked up GXE with the sport suspension package.

Hope this helps.

Gord.
